Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM:- To find the section modulus of the hood and optimize form maximum efficiency.

OBJECTIVE: - Use the Section from your Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula

S = I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

THEORY:- Section modulus is the ratio of the area moment of inertia about the neutral axis and the outer most fiber from the neutral axis

Section modulus can be represented mathematically by-

S = I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object.

It can be said that from the bending moment equation that bending mooent is directly propotional to section modulus so to improve the strength and bending resistance we have to increase the section modulus .

The above image shows how an improved section modulus can improve the bending resistance of the wooden plank.

CALCULATION :-

Default intersection section modulus

I min= 5.74855e-07 M4 = 574855 mm4

I max = 0.000113251 M4 = 113251000 mm4

Y = 477.026/2 = 238.513 mm

Putting it in formula

S = I/Y

S =2410.162 mm3

Optimized intersection section modulus

I min = 6.37419e-07 M4 = 637419 mm4

I max = 0.000123611 M4 = 123611000 mm4

Y = 477.026/2 = 238.513 mm

Putting it in formula

S = I/Y

S = 2672.470 mm3

CONCLUSION:-

By comparing the results of section modulus 0f both the intersections we can conclude that the section modulus of optimized intersection is higher than that of the default, which will improve the strength and load bearing capacity of the hood.
