Section Modulus calculation and optimization
SECTION MODULUS CALCULATION AND OPTIMAZTION IN HOOD
AIM: Calculate the sectiton modulus of the hood and optimize the section modulus
OBJECTIVE:
- To calculate the moment of inertia for the designed hood.
- To find out the section modulus.
- To modify the designed hood.
- To find out the section modulus and draw its inference.
SECTION MODULUS
Section modulus is the measure of how strong a structural member is. Higher the section modulus higher is the strength of the member. Section modulus is given by the formula below
S= I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus in mm3
I = Moment of Inertia in mm4
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object in mm

Fig 1: Section of hood

Fig 2: MOI of the hood
Section modulus (S)=13610/439.7
S =31 mm3

Fig 3: Section of modified hood

Fig 4: MOI of modified hood
Section modulus (S)=14110/439.7
S =33 mm3
From the above values it is clear that the modified hood has higher section modulus. So, modified hood is stronger than the earlier section.
The modification adopted is to increase the height of emboss thus by reducing the distance between inner and outer panel.
CONCLUSION
Section modulus of the hood is found and an optimized hood design is suggested.
