Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM
To Find the Section from the Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula.
S = I/y
SECTION MODULUS
- Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of beams or flexural members.
- Other geometric properties used in design include area for tension and shear, radius of gyration for compression, and second moment of area and polar second moment of area for stiffness.
Section Modulus calculation
SECTION 1

Max moment of inertia=4.833895369e+06[mm^4]
Min moment of inertia=1.479816394e+04[mm^4]
Total distance of the hood=880.1232 mm
Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object y=Total distance of the hood/2
y=880.1232 mm/2
y=440.0616mm
S = I/y
S =1.479816394e+04/440.0616
S =33.6274828
SECTION 2

Max moment of inertia=2.370918978e+06[mm^4]
Min moment of inertia=7.915441923e+03[mm^4]
Total distance of the hood=880.1232 mm
Distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object y=Total distance of the hood/2
y=880.1232 mm/2
y=440.0616mm
S = I/y
S =7.915441923e+03/440.0616
S =17.98712254
RESULT
SECTION 1:
S =33.6274828
SECTION 2:
S =17.98712254
- The difference between of the section 1 and section 2 is varrying distance between inner hood and outer hood
- So the moment of inertia will increase and as well as the strength of the hood
- This calculation is nessaary to know about the design capacity
