Section Modulus calculation and optimization

AIM

To Use the Section from Hood design and calculate the Section Modulus using the formula

S = I/y

Where,

S = Section Modulus

I = Moment of Inertia

y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object

PROCEDURE:

The data are collected from taking the master section using the mid plane

SAMPLE CALCULATION

CASE1)FRONT CRASH ORIGINAL

Imin (in Meters)=2.013*10^6 m

Imax(in Meters)=6.907*10^8 m

Imin (in mm)=2013000 mm

Imax (in mm)=690700000 mm

Total Dist=875.388 mm

Y=Total Dist./2 = 437.694 mm

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y ; Smax=Imax/Y

Smin=2013000/437.694 => 4599.103 mm

Smax=690700000/437.694 => 1578043.107mm

Savg=(4599.103+1578043.107)/2 => 791321.105mm

CASE2)FRONT CRASH 1.5MM

Imin (in Meters)=2.337*10^6

Imax(in Meters)=7.823*10^8

Imin (in mm)=2337000

Imax (in mm)=782300000

Total Dist=875.105

Y=Total Dist./2 = 437.5525

S=I/Y

Smin=Imin/Y ; Smax=Imax/Y

Smin= 2337000/437.5525 => 5341.073

Smax=782300000/437.5525 =>1787899.737

Savg=(5341.073+1787899.737)/2 =>896620.405

By Comparing both the cases

791321.105mm < 896620.405mm

CONCLUSION

I Hereby Conclude that the Section Modulus(S) value for the Profile

1.Front Crash 1.5mm

2.Side Crash 1.5 mm

are higher when compared with the original profiles.

So I suggest these changes in the Dimension to get a Higher Strength Hood.
