Week 8 - Challenge 3 - Coin Holder Design

Aim: To create coin holder Plastic component through the given Class A surface. To begin with, the tooling axis for the given Class A surface should meet the requirement of Draft angle and at the end perform Draft Analysis.
Thickness of component to be 2.5 mm.
Procedure
Part I:
* Import the .IGS ,. STEP file into CATIA V5. * fit the obj. to screen. Save the file into .CATPART
*Open the file save it.
*Using Join Command [Join Selet Distant propogation]
*Join all surface into single one
*Use vernier tool to check the flat surfaces.
*By changing orientation and select a axis at which maximum part is visible.
*choose a surface and use point [•]
point> on surface select a Surface>Enter value '0'
Choose line [/]
line >point direction >select points >Select axis
*The created line is the tooling axis Publish it.
Part II:
*Using Extract option, extract all flat surface Extract Select all flat surface→ Ok.
*Untrim / Extrapolate the extracted Surfaces
*Offset → select the untrim (on Extrapolated surfaces) Ok
*Now untrim the unwanted portions, so we obtain the.offset of A surface of 2.5mm
*Fillet all the edges of required dimension. + class B surface is ready - Publish it
Part III:
* Make surface A visible and make 2-3 boundary limit as required.
*Sweep-> Using Draft angle - /dist(or)degree / dist.
*Now Join the Surface A &C.
*Use extrapolate and completely check there is no open boundaries
*C surface is created and Join A+C and publish it
*Make A+C surface
*Trim the extra surfaces and the required part of 2.5 mm thickness is created
*Go to Part Modelling Close surface → fill
* So the surface model is converted into part model.
*Draft Analysis is made on both sides "90"
Challenges:
*During offsetting the untrim or Extrapolated region, the wrong surface is created and it's difficult to sort out on which side the offset must be.
Trimming the excess area, affects the original surface.

Conclusion
The required part coin holder is designed meeting the requirement of 2.5 mm and the draft was analysed

MATERIAL TO BE USED FOR COIN HOLDER:

ABS Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

ABS plastic is considered very strong structurally. This makes it an ideal choice for various applications that need strong and stiff plastic that is resistant to external strength impacts. It is highly used in applications like protective housings, camera housings, stiff packagings, etc which need to be structurally sturdy.

Physical properties of ABS plastic:

Following are the key physical properties of ABS plastic:

  • High impact resistance
  • High rigidity
  • Heat and chemical resistance
  • High electrical insulating properties
  • Abrasion and stain resistance
  • Structural/Dimensional stability
  • Good surface brightness
  • Weldability/Moldability

Mechanical properties of ABS plastic:

Benefits of ABS plastic

Coming down to the benefits of ABS plastic in comparison to other available plastic resins.

So why is ABS one of the most commonly used plastics, especially when it comes to products manufactured by injection molding technology?

As mentioned earlier in the article, the chemical, physical, mechanical and electrical properties of ABS plastic give it some unique characteristics. It’s relatively low melting point and low gas transition temperature makes it an easy to use material for plastic injection molding.

ABS can be easily liquefied and molded into complex shapes through injection molding techniques.

Its 100% recyclability makes it possible to be melted again and again and reshaped without any chemical degradation or burning.

ABS is considered a very “safe to handle” plastic since it cools down and hardens quickly. Further, it is relatively easy to manipulate, paint and decorate which makes it a preferred choice for products that depend on a high-quality finish.

Its strong impact resistance, heat resistance, and shock absorbance make it a preferred choice for applications that require structure, form, and sturdiness.

The lightweight and scratch-resistant characters make it a good choice for automotive applications. Since the need here is to substitute metals with an excellent finish lightweight plastic material, ABS works as a wonderful alternative.

Finally, its reasonably low production costs make it a very economical solution and choice amongst various other thermoplastic options available in the market.
