Reinforcement Detailing of Beams from ETABS output
Aim: To design the beams in detail from the Etabs
- To provide details of longitudinal and shear reinforcement for the given two continuous beams.
- To calculate the value of maximum shear force in any one of the spans in the continuous beams.
Softwares Used:
- AutoCAD
- ETABS
Introduction:
- Beams are horizontal structural elements used for the supporting lateral loads.
- The design and detailing of RC beams involves the selection of the proper beam size and the quantity of longitudinal and shear reinforcement that will satisfy ultimate and serviceability limit state requirements.
Procedure:
Step 1:
- Download the attachment and then open

Step 2:
- Check the load combinations

Step 3:
- Start Design/Check

Step 4:
- After the completion of the beam design, select the Display Design Info option

- Select the Longitudinal Reinforcing in the Design Output and click on the OK button

- Next the longitudinal reinforcement details will appear

Step 5:
- Draw the Reinforcement diagram of 3 span continous beam along Grid-A and provide the reinforcement details in AutoCAD Software
- The maximum Ast for the bottom support is 1766 sq.mmand bottom middle is 702 sq.mm
- The maximum Ast for the top support is 1889 sq.mm and top middle is 453 sq.mm
- Provide 3-28
">Φ at the top and bottomΦ - Provide 1-8
">Φ at the top supports for the continuous beamΦ

Step 6:
- Draw the Reinforcement diagram of 7 span continous beam along Grid-3 and provide the reinforcement details.
- The maximum Ast for the bottom support is 1061 sq.mm and bottom middle is 1493 sq.mm
- The maximum Ast for the top support is 1915 sq.mm and top middle is 479 sq.mm
- Provide 3-22
">Φ at the top and bottomΦ - Provide 1-10
">Φ and 1-12Φ ">Φ at the top supports and we provide 2-16Φ ">Φ at the bottom middle for the continuous beamΦ

Step 7:
- After providing the beam reinforcement details in AutoCAD, select the beam and right click it then the new tab appears
- Click on the Details option in Concrete beam design tab

- Next the Shear details will be visible
- As per the clause 6.3.3 the design force is 232 kN.
- Maximum Shear force = 174.11 kN.

RESULT:
- The beams are designed successfully in Etabs software.
- Details of longitudinal and shear reinforcement for the two continuous beams is provided
- Maximum shear force in the continuous beams is calculated using the Etabs software.
