Project on Concrete Mix Design for various grades of Concrete

Concrete Mix Design for M35 grade concrete with flyash

Data required:

a) Grade of concrete M35

b)Maximum nominal size of aggregate 20mm

c)Environment exposure condition (assume) severe

d)Minimum cement content: 320 kg (for severe condition)

e)Workability (in terms of slump) 100mm

f)Grading zone of fine aggregate (assume) zone 1

g)Specific gravity of cement: 3.15

h)Specific gravity of Coarse Aggregate: 2.74

i)Specific gravity of Fine Aggregate: 2.74

1) Target Mean Strength(f'ck):

f'ck=fck+1.65s

s=5 (from table 8 of IS code 10262:1982)

f'ck= 35+1.65*5=43.25N/mm^2

2) Selection of water cement ratio:

calculate the water cement ratio from graph 1 of IS code 10262:1982

for f'ck=43.25

water cement ratio=0.35

From graph 2 of IS code 10262:1982

water cement ratio= 0.34

water cement ratio as per environment exposure condition from table 5 of IS code 456:2000

for severe condition and reinforce concrete

water cement ratio=0.45

Hence, the lower value of the above three is adobted as the water cement ratio so,

here, water cement ratio=0.34

3) Selection of water content:

(from table 2 of IS10262:2009)

Maximum water content for slump between 25mm to 50mm= 186kg or lit

and addition slump of 3% may be added for every 25mm slump

so here, for 100mm slump 6% is added

water content= 6/100*186+186=197.16kg

4) Selection of cement content:

here, water cement ratio=0.34

i.e., cement=197.16/0.34=580kg

Now we use Flyash So Lets assume 10% cementitious material content

cementitious material content=580*1.10=638kg/m^3

water content=197.16kg/m^3

so, water cement ratio=197.16/638=0.31

Flyash @30%of total content= 638*30%191.4kg/m^3

cement used=446.6kg/m^3

5)Volume of Coarse and Fine aggregate:

Here, fine aggregate is in zone one so the volume so coarse aggregate is 60%or 0.6

and change is water cement ratio=0.5-0.31=0.19

so corrected volume of coarse aggregate=0.64

but for pumpable concrete volume of aggregate is decreased by 10%

Volume of Coarse aggregate = 0.64*0.9=0.58

and Volume of Fine aggregate= 1-0.58=0.42

6)Mix Calculations:

Volume of concrete=1m^3

Volume of cement=(446/3.15)*(1/1000)=0.142

volume of water=(197.16/1)*(1/1000)=0.197

Volume of Aggregate=1-(0.142+0.197)=0.661

Mass of Coarse aggregate= 0.661*0.58*2.74*1000=1050kg/m^3

Mass of Fine aggregate= 0.661*0.42*2.74*1000=761kg/m^3

7)Mix Proportion:

Cement:446kg/m^3

Water:197.16kg/m^3

Fine Aggregate:760kg/m^3

Coarse Aggregate:1050kg/m^3

Water cement ratio:0.34

8) Mix Ratio:

b)Maximum nominal size of aggregate 20mm

c)Environment exposure condition (assume) severe

d)Minimum cement content: 320 kg (for severe condition)

e)Workability (in terms of slump) 100mm

f)Grading zone of fine aggregate (assume) zone 1

1) Target Mean Strength(f'ck):

f'ck=fck+1.65s

s=5 (from table 8 of IS code 10262:1982)

f'ck= 50+1.65*5=58.25N/mm^2

2) Selection of water cement ratio:

calculate the water cement ratio from graph 1 of IS code 10262:2019

for f'ck=58.25

water cement ratio=0.33

From graph 2 of IS code 10262:1982

water cement ratio= 0.34

water cement ratio as per environment exposure condition from table 5 of IS code 456:2000

for severe condition and reinforce concrete

water cement ratio=0.45

Hence, the lower value of the above three is adobted as the water cement ratio so,

here, water cement ratio=0.33

3) Selection of water content:

so here, for 100mm slump 6% is added

water content= 6/100*186+186=197.16kg

4) Selection of cement content:

here, water cement ratio=0.33

i.e., cement=197.16/0.33=597kg

5)Volume of Coarse and Fine aggregate:

Here, fine aggregate is in zone 1 so the volume so coarse aggregate is 60%or 0.6

and change is water cement ratio=0.5-0.33=0.17

so corrected volume of coarse aggregate=0.634

but for pumpable concrete volume of aggregate is decreased by 10%

Volume of Coarse aggregate = 0.634*0.9=0.57

and Volume of Fine aggregate= 1-0.57=0.43

6)Mix Calculations:

Volume of concrete=1m^3

Volume of cement=(597/3.15)*(1/1000)=0.190

volume of water=(197.16/1)*(1/1000)=0.197

Volume of Aggregate=1-(0.190+0.197)=0.613

Mass of Coarse aggregate= 0.634*0.57*2.74*1000=990kg/m^3

Mass of Fine aggregate= 0.634*0.43*2.74*1000=747kg/m^3

7)Mix Proportion:

Cement:597kg/m^3

Water:197.16kg/m^3

Fine Aggregate:747kg/m^3

Coarse Aggregate:990kg/m^3

Water cement ratio:0.34

8) Mix Ratio:
