Analysis of a practical automotive wiring circuit
1. Identify each of the major elements in the above automotive wiring diagram.
A. The major elements in the above automotive wiring diagram are:
- Battery.
- Ground.
- Starter.
- Fuse.
- Generator.
- Current and Voltage Regulator.
- Ammeter.
2. Explain the purpose and working of any three elements briefly.
A.
1. Battery: battery in an Electric Vehicle (EV) is to store electrical energy that can be used to power the vehicle's
electric motor and other electrical systems. The battery serves as the primary source of energy for the EV, replacing the
conventional internal combustion engine and fuel tank found in traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. The battery in an
EV plays a vital role in providing the necessary energy for the vehicle's propulsion and electrical systems. It enables clean
and efficient transportation by storing electricity and powering the electric motor, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels
and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Ground: The ground symbol (usually a minus or negative sign) represents the vehicle's electrical ground, the
purpose of a ground in an electrical system is to provide a reference point, complete the circuit, ensure safety, and
minimize interference. It serves as a pathway for electrical current to return to the power source and facilitates proper
operation, protection, and stability of the system.
3. Starter: The primary function of the starter in an EV is to provide the initial rotational force to get the main motor
running, enabling the vehicle to propel forward. The purpose of a starter is to initiate the rotation of the electric motor
when the vehicle is turned on. The starter is responsible for getting the motor to a speed where it can self-sustain and
continue running on its own.
3. If the total load is 10A from a battery, what should be the fuse rating?
A.
To Calculate the Fuse rating we can find it using the formula:
Fuse rating = Load current x 1.25
Fuse rating = 10A x 1.25 = 12.5A
So, Fuse Rating for the 10A load should be 12.5 A
4. If 500W is the load, what is the voltage and capacity of battery you recommend?
A. Assuming a 12V battery for this Application as there are no specific operations suggested for the load.
Therefore, the Battery Capacity can be found using the formula:
Battery capacity = Load power / Battery voltage
Battery capacity = 500 / 12
= 41.7 Ah
I recommend 12V and 41.7 Ah Battery.
5. Identify any two elements which are connected parallel to each other. Why they are connected in parallel?
A.
Battery Modules: In an EV, the battery pack is composed of multiple battery modules connected in parallel. Each
module consists of several individual battery cells connected in series. Connecting battery modules in parallel increases
the overall capacity and current capability of the battery pack.
6. Identify any two elements which are connected in series. Why they are connected in series?
A.
Battery Cells: Within a battery module, individual battery cells are connected in series to increase the overall voltage
output. By connecting cells in series, the voltage of each cell adds up, resulting in a higher voltage for the battery
module. Multiple battery modules are then connected in parallel to increase capacity.
