Project 1 - Developing the Schedule for the “Construction of Police Station Building”

1.What would the simplest work break down structure for this project?

2. Construct a project network by deciding on predecessors and successors for each activity.

Equations used

  • Early Start (ES): Earliest possible point in time at which a task can start. (Actual duration of the first activity)
  • Early Finish (EF): Earliest possible point in time at which a task can finish. (ES + duration)
  • Late Start (LS): Latest possible point in time at which a task can start. (LF -Duration)
  • Late Finish (LF): Latest possible point in time at which a task can finish. (EF of last activity)
  • Total Float = LF-EF or LS-ES

3.Identify constraints, dependencies and milestones.

Constraints are the limitations or restrictions for a perticular activity

  • Project constraints
    • Logic
    • Limited Workspace
    • Technological constraints
    • Resource constraints
    • Physical constraints
    • Project delivery

Scheduling constraints are

  • Time constraint
    • Time is the essence of contract.
  • Resources constraints
    • Limited resources

The physical constraints are as follows

The land identified was at the heart of city with some slum dwellers and road side temporary shops.

There was a temple too suppose to come in the vicinity of the new Police station building.

The logistics too were tough to arrange as there was only two approaches to the land, one through the main market road and other one via the subsidiary road which crosses the municipal school and an open space allocated for weekly vegetable market(on Sunday).

there were chances of opposition from local shopkeepers for working in peak trading and business hours as this might disrupt their routine of works.

Following are the technical specifications

The police station is supposed to be structure having one floor (ground) and block masonry with external plaster and paint.

The police station along with administrative office needs to be equipped with Police control room and conference halls with controlled access along with 3 lock up cells. The complete building has to be air conditioned using ducted split units and needs to have electrical panels and DG backup. The fire safety and plumbing & sanitary works too needs to be there as per the requirement. The complete building needs to be IT enabled with Access control and CCTV provisions with one monitoring Room. A 6 meter peripheral boundary wall with security gates separates the market place from the Police station.

Dependencies include the relationship or connection between the activities The four types of dependencies are

Finish to start

Finish to finish

Start to start and start to finish

Here the most commonly used dependency is finish to start means activity B or the successor activity will start only after finishing the predecessor activity. And other dependencies are as mentioned in the above table.

Milestones describe the project's essential steps or phases if the tasks were removed from the timetable.

Milestone activities are as follows

  • Start of the project
  • Initiation
  • design
  • Procurement
  • Construction
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Closure or finish of the project.

4.Ensure that every activity has to have a predecessor and successor except the start and end of project.
