Planetary Gear
Aim: To perform motion analysis on planetary gear system using given specifications and cases as mentioned below by designing the planetary gears, carrier shafts and plotting angular velocity.
| Sl.No | Input | Output | Fixed |
| 1 | Sun Gear | Carrier | Ring Gear |
| 2 | Ring Gear | Carrier | Sun Gear |
| 3 | Sun Gear | Ring Gear | Carrier |
Calculations:
Given that,
- Ring Gear
- Module = 2.5 (You must use the metric system in design modeler)
- Number of teeth = 46
- Sun Gear
- Number of teeth = 14
- Input Speed of the Gear = 200 rpm.
- Number of planet gears = 4
We know that:
No.of teeth on ring gear= 2x(no.of teeth on planetary gear)+no. of teeth on sun gear
Therefore, No. of teeth of planet gear=16
Module=pitch circle diameter/no. of teeth
Therefore,
Pitch circle diameter of planet gear=40mm
Pitch circle diameter of sun gear=35mm
Pitch circle diameter of ring gear=115mm
Center distance=radius of sun gear+radius of planet gear=17.5mm+20mm=37.5mm
Procedure:
1. Carrier was designed according to the calculated center distance of 37.5mm between sun gear and planet gear with a extrusion of 10mm. Shaft of 20mm diameter is extruded about 80mm outwards.
2. Gears are imported form toolbox->ANSI metric. Internal spur gear was selected for ring gear with 46 teeth. Spur gear was selected for sun gear with 14 teeth and 4 planet gears with 16 teeth each as per the above calculations.
3. Carrier was inserted to complete the assembly by providing contraints like coincident and concentric by selected the faces and edges.

4. Solidworks motion is selected under solidworks addins to perform motion analysis by defining the rotating components, solidbody contacts and making few components fixed according to the given cases and angular velocities for the same were plotted as follows.
Case 1: RPM=200
| Input | Output | Fixed | |
| Sun Gear | Carrier | Ring Gear |

Case 2: RPM=200
| Input | Output | Fixed |
| Ring Gear | Carrier | Sun Gear |

Case 3: RPM=200
| Input | Output | Fixed |
| Sun Gear | Ring Gear | Carrier |

Conclusion:
Case 1:Since the ring gear is fixed, the planet gears along with the carrier revolve around the sun gear.
Case 2:Sun gear is fixed and ring gear is given the motor input, the ring and planet gears along with the carrier revolve arond the sun gear with almost constant velocity.
Case 3:Carrier being fixed, planet gears revolution is obstructed making the ring gear only to revolve around the sun gear.
