Introduction to National Building Code and Steps in a Construction project
1) Why are building codes or standards essential for the modeling/ efficiency of drawings in Revit ?
Solution:
- The National Building code is a document that provides guidelines for construction of structures like Residential, Institutional, Educational, Commercial, Assembly & Storage Spaces.
- It is Important to follow these guidelines that are made to protect the overall health of the construction & Ensure the health and safety of the Public and the Residence.
- Building codes are the standards are essential for the modeling or efficiency of drawing in Revit software.
- A set of Standards that are uniform to all Structures.
- These codes protect the overall health of the construction as well as the public and the residence.
- Designer constantly refer the these building codes for modeling which enhance their knowledge in this field.
- Also it combines the modern construction methods.
- These standards also help the government agencies to approve the plans & It also provide the building standards.
2) From the National Building Code list the groups that will be essential to you when you begin modeling in Autodesk Revit.
Solution:
- Group A : Residential Buildings.
- Group B : Educational Building.
- Group C : Assembly Buildings.
- Group D : Institutional Buildings.
- Group E : Mercantile Buildings.
- Group F : Business Buildings.
- Group G : Storage Buildings.
- Group H : Industrial Buildings.
- Group J : Hazardous Buildings.
3) List the five major steps that occur in project cycle . The steps should include from conceptualization of project to maintenance and final stage.
Solution:
- Initialization : In this state it is necessary to figure out the objective of the project to determine weather the project is feasible. The Major Step involve on the Initiation State is undertaking a feasibility study then identify the scope of project deliverables etc.
- Planning : Once the Project is approved to move foreword based on business case, Statement of work, Project initiation documents the next phase id planning. During this phase the large project is Brocken down in smaller tasks, Building a team and preparing a schedule for the completion of the assignments. to creating a smaller goals with the larger projects make you sure each ease is achievable within the time frame.
- Create the Project Plan.
- Create the workflow diagrams.
- Estimating a budgets.
- Gathering Resources.
- Execution : This phase turn plan into action. The project manger job is to keep a work on track. He/she organize the team member as per timelines and make sure work done is according to the original plan.
- Closuer : Once the team has completed the work on a project closure phase starts.
- To Analyse the project performance.
- Analyzing the Team performance.
4) Give examples of different disciplines involved in construction of a project.
Solution:
- Construction : Managing the building of Civil Engineering system from beginning to end which includes the coordination between both the owners , contractors, & Designers also.
- Finance & Estimating : including accounting financial contracts, & estimating the cost of thee activities.
- Contracts & Bid
- Geotechnical : Designing Foundations & Earthquake System to support soil itself and transfer load from structures.
- Managements : Help to managing the equipment's personal & supply to build more effectively and economically.
- Structural : Structural Team Design in structural members used to support Loads for a specified Public functions such as bridges, buildings, tower, etc.
- Surveying
- Architectural
- Mechanical
- Electrical
- Plumbing
5) How are buildings classified ? Place the following buildings under each category
a. Four unit apartments
b. School with capacity of 1000 students
c. A single unit shop.
d. Multi story Shopping complex
e. Steel machine factory
Solution:
- Four unit apartments : Group A : Residential Buildings.
- School with capacity of 1000 students : Group B : Educational Building.
- A single unit shop : Group E : Mercantile Buildings.
- Multi story Shopping complex : Group E : Mercantile Buildings or Complex Building.
- Steel machine factory : Group H : Industrial Buildings.
6) Distinguish the roles of Design team and Management team
Solution:
- Design Team :
- Helps to finalize the plan.
- The project requiring such multidisciplinary needs a coordinator approach among the professionals for proper integration of Various designing.
- to take care of the multidisciplinary requirements the design team have professionals from required discipline shall be constituted at the appropriate stage.
- Evolutionaries in the project.
- The composition of team shall depend on the nature & magnitude of the project.
- Implementation of the design.
- to ensure the proper implementation of the design the design team may associated during the both construction and even an execution stage also.
- Management Team :
- They have to achieve the accomplishment of the project in accordance with the design and specification.
- Execute the design.
- This team is also responsible for day to day execution.
- Design supervision quality control etc.
- They have to satisfy the completion of the project.
7) Refer to NBC, Identify the modeling requirements for the project ( from week 4).
a. Height Limitations
b. Area Limitations
c. Room sizing
d. Wall height
e. Thickness based on fire life and safety
f. Passageway requirements
Solution :
- Height Limitations :
- The height of the building in my model is 9.14 m which is less than 15 m.
- Hence it follows NBC guidelines.
- Area Limitations :
- The area occupied by my building in my model is grater than 40 sq.m
- Floor area of my model is 40' x 50' = 185.8 sq.m.
- Hence it follows NBC guidelines.
- Room sizing :
- In my model no. of rooms in building are 6 therefore total area of rooms is (23 m^2)x4 + (18 m^2)x2 = 128 m^2.
- Hence it follows NBC guidelines.
- Wall height :
- In my model all the walls have a height of 3.048 m which is grater than the min. wall height specified in the code.
- Hence it follows NBC guidelines.
- Thickness based on fire life and safety :
- In my model thickness of wall is 9" and 4" as per the requirements which is grater than the values specified in the NBC code.
- Hence it follows NBC guidelines.
- Passageway requirements :
- It follows NBC guidelines.
8) We have identified requirements for modeling from question 7, Use these numbers from code book and verify the numbers used in modeling the unit from week 2 to week 4. If the numbers are not reasonable, use the numbers obtained from the code book to create a revision of the mode.
Solution:
Since, My model is satisfying all the NBC code requirements in the question 7. so the model is safe and it follows the NBC Guidelines.
So, No revision of the model is required.
