Introduction to National Building Code and Steps in a Construction project
1)Why are building codes or standards essential for the modeling/ efficiency of drawings in Revit ?
- Building codes are the criteria set for design, construction and execution for civil structures with respect to the technical point of view.
- Globally each country follows their own building codes which is decided by the environmental aspects of their geopraphy.
- On considering India, we follow codel standards called NBC (National Building code)
- Since, revit is a design, draft and model based tool all the factors with respect to the building codes will be considered.
- For Example: Revit has model components like Column, Beam, Walls, Floors, roof etc,. Each components has its desired paramerers, Such as height, thickness, length, width and so on. The Minimum and permisiable values of such parameters are controlled by the National Building Codes (NBC)
- Revit plays a crutial role in design and drafting filed becaues of its efficiency (revise-instantly).
2) From the National Building Code list the groups that will be essential to you when you begin modeling in Autodesk Revit.
- Group A - Residential Buildings
- Group B- Educational Buildings
- Group C- Assembly buildings
- Group D- Institutional Buildings
- Group E- Mercantile Buildings
- Group F- Business Buildings
- Group G- Storage Buildings
- Group H- Industrial Buildings
- Group J- Hazardous Buildings
3) List the five major steps that occur in project cycle . The steps should include from conceptualization of project to maintenance and final stage.
Commencement : Studying the nature of project (landscape, Environmental condition, financial aspects, required Man-power, Profits)
Planning : After taking hold on the project, Designing as per the client need for execution (Major part of BIM will be carried out here)
execution : accomplishing the planned things in terms of construction (On Field)
closure : Completion of project (Handing over to the client)
Maintanence : After completion of the project all the structural and nonstructural elements such as frames, HVAC units, Electrical circuits should be monitored in routine.
4) Give examples of different disciplines involved in construction of a project.
- Construction
- Finance and Estimation
- Contracts and Bid
- Geo-technical
- Managements
- Structural
- Surveying
5)How are buildings classified ? Place the following buildings under each category
a. Four unit apartments.
b. School with capacity of 1000 students.
c. A single unit shop.
d. Multi story Shopping complex.
e. Steel machine factory.
a. Four unit apartments-Residential Building (Group-A)
b. School with capacity of 1000 students-Educational Building (Group-B)
c. A single unit shop - Mercantile Building (Group-E)
d. Multi story Shopping complex-Mercantile Building (Group-E)
e. Steel machine factory- Industrial Building (Group-H)
6)Distinguish the roles of Design team and Management team.
Design team:
works on the design part of the project.
they are the link inbetween the client and the administration.
Executes the process in terms of construction.
Management team:
works in the financial part of the project.
supports the design team in terms of all aspects.
Plays a major role in accomplishing the project.
7)Refer to NBC, Identify the modeling requirements for the project ( from week 4).
a. Height Limitations
b. Area Limitations
c. Room sizing
d. Wall height
e. Thickness based on fire life and safety
f. Passageway requirements
a. Height Limitations

Height is as per the NBC hence it is safe.
b. Area Limitations

Area is as per the NBC and hence the model is safe.
c)Room sizing.
As per NBC part 3 room size are in allowable limit.

Hence the model is safe.
8) We have identified requirements for modeling from question 7, Use these numbers from code book and verify the numbers used in modeling the unit from week 2 to week 4. If the numbers are not reasonable, use the numbers obtained from the code book to create a revision of the mode.
With respect to the Q.No. 7 all the parameters such as area limitation, Height limitation and room sizing are as per the NBC.
