Hood design-Week 2

Hood
A car hood is the metal part that covers the engine of an automobile. The hood also considered as
another type of door in a vehicle as it consist of an outer panel and inner panel. The inner
panel provides strength while the outer panel functions as the metal cover.

AIM- To design Hood outer and inner panel, position and striker and hinges and providing emboss and
mastic points .

Design of Hood
• Hood is design according to car engines, aerodynamics.
• To complete hood design model ,we need to design 4 parts

Hood Thickness Information
• Outer Panel Thickness = 0.75mm
• Inner Panel Thickness = 0.75mm
• Reinforcement Thickness = 1.5mm

Mastic data
• Mastic data is used for to reduce the weight of the inner panel and also to provide some space
in engine side.

• Providing mastic points for applying mastic which are rubber like material, which heated
spread evenly and help in reducing noise, vibration and harshness.

Hemming
• Hemming is the process of joining inner and outer panel together. A set of rollers roll the
sheet with inner panel three to four times to get perfect result. The gap is filled with sealants
to make joint waterproof.

• Providing reliefs at corner to reduce stress concentration.

• The dimension are (0.75+0.75+0.2)+(0.2+0.1+0.75) and the results are shown below

Latch
Latch is a type of mechanical fastener that joints two objects while allowing

for their regular separation.

Hinge
A hinge is a mechanical bearing that connects two solid objects, typically

allowing only a limited angle of rotation between them. Two objects connected by an ideal hinge
rotate relative to each other about a fixed axis of rotation: all other
translations or rotations being prevented, and thus a hinge has one degree of freedom.
Hinges may be made of flexible material or of moving components.

Conclusion
Thus, the Hood design is completed considering all the master sections and all other requirements.
