Hood design-Week 2
AIM:
To design the Hood inner panel, outer panel by following the Master Section of the Hood and the necessary reinforcements like Latch and Hinge reinforcements with design parameters and assemble the complete parts of the Hood by considering the parameters.
HOOD:
Hood is the door for the Engine compartment. It is the front portion of the car.It acts as an engine cover and to allow access to engine repair and maintenance. The Hood compartment contains Hood outer panel,Inner panel, hinges, latches and striker.

The Inner panel of the hood is provided with holes as it adds stiffness to the outer panel and the complete hood and provides rigidity and also helps in weight reduction.
The Striker of the hood acts as a locking mechanism for lifting the hood.

The Latch is the part where the striker is mounted and holds the hood in closed position.

Embossing is the stamping process which forms with high pressure applied on the workpiece to form raised or sunken designs or relief in sheet metal with male and female dies.
Hemming is the process of rolling or folding the edge of the sheet metal over another part in order to achieve a tight fit usually to an angle of 180 degrees.

Mastic is a single-component sealing compound applied between outer and inner panels at the mastic points. The Mastic is a rubberised component which reduced the weight and also noise and vibrations from the hood.
Deep drawing is a sheet metal forming process in which a sheet metal blank is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch.

METHODOLOGY:
1.Create the inner panel using the master section with design parameters and then create the embossments on the inner panel.
2.Create the embossments for Latch and Hinges on the inner panel.
3.Create a Latch trajectory for the inner panel between the hinge and latch striker.
4.Create the Outer panel with the relief areas at front and rear.
5.Assemble all the components.
PROCEDURE:
1.Split the Outer panel surface with the plane and offset it to 0mm so as not to disturb the Main surface.

2.As in the Master section, offset the surface to a distance of 2mm and then split the offsetted surface as in the master section.Create the surface as in the master section by offsetting the surface and then using the Blend option, create the surface between the two surfaces by selecting the two surface boundaries.

3.Fillet the edges as in the master section.

4.Now create the Embossments as shown by offsetting the boundary line to a distance of 20mm and Split the surface with the boundary line.

5.Create the Sweep at the boundary at an angle of 15 degrees and create the surface of 5mm from the embossment surface and fillet the edges.

6.Create the embossments by drawing sketches in a pattern in which the force during the impact should travel/divert towards the outside rather than affecting the passengers as shown.

7.After creating the embossments create the Mastic points where it influences to a diameter of 80mm and then make it symmetry to other side.

8.In Assembly, assemble the hinge and latch at the position where the latch should be at the front side and hinge should be wider side.
9.Now create the emboss for the hinge by placing it in position and then make inner portion symmetry to the other side and join the surface.

10.Create a centerline (Tangent line) in sketch in between the striker and also create a centerline(Hinge axis) for the hinges by creating points in both hinge centers as shown.Create a center point on the hinge axis.

11.Create a Circle with the center point on the hinge axis and tangent line of the striker,so the Trajectory line acts as opening and closing operation of the hood.

12.The circle should be tangent to the line of striker as shown and then create the embossment to the latch with respect to its position.

13.Create the outer panel by offsetting the main surface to a distance of 2.45mm as in the Master section and then split the surface to a distance of 6mm from the boundary and provide the corner relief of 3mm and thicken it to 0.75mm.

14.Creeate the reinforcements for latch and hinges with a thickness of 1.5mm.

15.In Assembly, assemble all the components and constrain them.

RESULT:
Designed the inner and outer hood and assembled the hinges, latches and reinforcements by following the Master section and design parameters.
