Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
WHEEL ARC CHALLENGE:
Fender Design: -
- Primary purpose to avoid sand, mud rock, liquid and other particle to be thrown in air due to rotation of wheel.
- Fender avoid motion of road particle to be thrown to pedestrian & to contain motion of these particles.
- Front fender is Individually designed where as rear fender is accommodated in body side structure.
- It also avoids hitting inside engine compartment of road particle due to motion of wheel.
- Fender skirts are used to enclose outside edge of wheel well.
- Fender are basically categorized as full bumper type and half bumper type.
- Full bumper type is not used nowadays since they require more blank size as compared to half bumper type which result in large scrap to be produced.
- In half bumper size with slight increase in bland size we can accommodate two fender in one bland which results in lesser scrap.
- In half bumper type we are also using plastic parts at front end which will also reduce weight and part.

- Wheel arch is an semi-circular area in fender, which houses the wheel well.
- It should have a sufficient clearance between tyre and wheel arch, so that it doesn't touch the wheel arch area during suspension.
- This clearance value differ from region to region, according to road condition.
For wheel arc calculation there are standards
Japan standard: - According to Japan standard the clearance value L should not be less than 5 mm at all 3 condition.
European standard:
The clearance L should not be less than 10 mm at all five condition. if it is so then styling engineer has to adjust curvature.
PROCEDURE:
Take plane on face of wheel and create straight line in vertical direction from centre of wheel name it as SA.
Create line of angle 30degree and 50 degree in forward and back ward direction and name them as SB and SC.
Then create horizontal line passing through the center of wheel. And create offset of 150 mm in upward direction and identify the point of intersection with the edge of wheel.
Draw an line passing through center of wheel and intersection point. Create angle bisector using bisecting line option available in lines name them as SD and SE.
Exit the sketch use measure tool and measure distance between line and fender outer edge.

SB=10mm

SA=9.9489mm

SC=0.113667mm

SD=2.8728mm

SE=5.9656mm

WHEN COMPARED THE VALUES WITH EUROPEAN STANDARDS THE FOLLOWING RESUL ACHIEVED :
SECTION REQUIRED CLEARANCE OBTAINED CLEARANCE RESULT
SA 10mm 9.9489mm FAIL
SB 10mm 10mm PASS
SC 10mm 0.113667mm FAIL
SD 10mm 2.8728mm FAIL
SE 10mm 5.9656mm FAIL
(SB clearance remaining all good).
Conclusion: -
From above
For SB value clearance requirement is satisfied but for other condition clearance is less than standard value of 10 mm.
Standard clearance value of 10 mm is not Satisfied.
(Style engineer has to change curvature of fender to satisfy European standard).
