Fender Design Challenge

FENDER DESIGN:

A fender is different than a bumper because it's a metal structure that frames the wheel well of your car, instead of the front or back. The fender extends between the front door to the front bumper covering the front wheels of the vehicle.

A fender is the curved portion of the car’s body that sits over and houses the wheels.

Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

What Is The Purpose Of A Fender On A Car?

The purpose of a fender is pretty simple. Its purpose is to keep mud, rocks, and other road debris from being thrown around by the tires. In other words, the fender is a housing for the wheels that keeps road debris contained. If there was nothing covering the wheels, all kinds of debris would be kicked up by the rotating tires.

The fender not only protects your car from sustaining damage from road debris but it prevents this debris from being thrown up at other vehicles on the road. This is why vehicles with large, oversized tires are often required by law to install fender flares.

TYPES OF FENDER:

1)FULL BUMPER TYPE

2)HALF BUMPER TYPE

1)FULL BUMPER TYPE:

Many people think that bumpers and fenders are the same part of the car. In actuality, the bumper is a plastic component that covers the front and back of your vehicle, while the fender is a metal structure that frames the wheel well.

Nowadays full bumper type fender is not used because they use bigger size blank to produce the part and the large scrap is also produce.

2)HALF BUMPER TYPE:

Half bumper type fender is used now and in future also it will be use because the blank size is less and the wastage or scrap is less comparing to the full bumper type fender.

FENDER IMPORTANCES:

There are quite a few auto body parts, even if they do not seem obvious to you. For starters, there are bumpers and the hood, which everybody knows. They steal the show most of the time. But when you go around the car there are some other parts as well.

The majority of people consider fenders to have a strictly aesthetic function. They are a part of the overall construction of the vehicle but only to give it a more finished look. Or are they? Interestingly enough, they actually have a very practical function, which is not that obvious from their name.

The fenders serve one main purpose – to prevent the tires from spreading dirt, mud, little stones and other road debris. Without the fenders, a small stone could easily be thrown back at another car and crack its windshield. And your car will get completely messy from all the road spray.

Back in the day the wheels stood more to the side of the car, and without the fenders, all the mud would get all over the car and over the people in there as well. That is because most vehicles back then didn’t have roofs.

With time the build of the vehicle got a bit wider overall and the fender became an integral part of the overall frame. It does not stick to the side any longer, but its function is largely the same. However, due to its nature, it can get rusty, especially if the paintjob is not done properly. Small cracks here and there can have water in them and then rust develops.

IN FENDER THERE ARE GENERALLY THERE ARE 5 MOUNTING AREAS :

1)DRIP MOUNT AREA

2)SILL MOUNT AREA

3)BUMPER MOUNT AREA

4)A-PILLAR MOUNT AREA

5)BAFFLE MOUNT AREA

  • DRIP AREA :

This regionis mounted below the hood inner panel which needs to be in flush when the hood is in closed condition and also there should be very less gaps.

And drip area is the connection of the fender with the engine compartment.

A drip area is welded or in some other case bolted down by self tapping screws .

  • SILL MOUNT AREA :

It is mostly gets connected with the door region of the car.

Sill mount is also called as rocker panels.

  • BUMPER MOUNTING AREA :

In bumper mount area one side corner of the bumper is mounted with the help of bolts or fastners.

The bumper mounting region is rigid in order to withstand the force acting upon it during collision. So the mounting place can be larger.

  • A-PILLAR MOUNT AREA :

The A-PILLAR mounting area is located near the cowl top of the car, where it is fastened with the cowl.

In other words, a pillar is mounted on the the front of the windshield .

  • BAFFLE MOUNT AREA :

In these mounting area, baffles are mounted using fasterns which is used to seal the opening between wheel and engine compartment, so that engine compartment cant be harmed by any kind of debris or mud splashes over it through the rotating wheel .

CONCLUSION:

So in these FENDER DESIGN project I have created DRIP,A PILLAR,SILL,BUMPER and BAFFLE mounting areas by the design requirements given, and I have also learnt about some basic commands in NX CAD through these fender design.
