Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
CALCULATE REPORT OF WHEEL ARC
OBJECTIVE
Calculation of given wheel arc area and prove whether the fender wheel will pass the European standard or not.
THEORY
There are two types of fenders in now times full body & half body fender. But in today’s time we use half fender type because of its low weight and also used less steel to make this type of fender. Which also affect to cost of car to reduce in mass production.
WHEEEL ARC AREA REGULATION REQUIREMENT
Wheel arch is cavity in vehicle which houses the tyres, and also provide the safety to pedestrian and car from the stones, chipping of paint, and mud to stick to car. For given wheel we need to check whether its pass or not.

JAPAN REGULATION REQUIREMENT
As per Japan standard, the clearance value L i.e., the gap between the wheel and fender arch should not be less then 5mm for the three-point B, A & C.

U.S. REGULATION
Line is drawn from the center of wheel for every 100 (degree) from -200 to 1800 (deg) as shown in fig. So as per U.S. standard the clearance gap b/w wheel & fender wheel arc should not be less then 5mm at every 100 (deg).

EUROPEAN STANDARDS FOR WHEEL ARCH:

Procedure
- Take a plane on the face of the wheel and create a certain straight-line SA from the center of the wheel
- Create two similar lines SB & SC at 300 and 500 angle respectively from the line SA taken from the center.
- Create a horizontal line passing from the center on the wheel and offset it to 150mm upwards, and mark its point of intersection with the edge of the wheel.
- Draw a line passing through center of the wheel & intersection point. Create angle bisector using bisecting line and name the two new lines created as SD & SE.
- Exit the sketch and measure the distance b/w the fender outer edge and the lines draw on the wheel.
OBTAINING RESULT:
SOFTWARE USED: NX12 (CAD)
Sketch is drawn on the wheel face as per the European standard provided and projected on the wheel arch at sections SA, SB, SC, SD, & SE to measure “L”.

Obtaining the value of clearance “L”.

1.Measuring “L” for the given wheel and fender at SB.

2.Measuring “L” for the given wheel and fender at SA.

3.Measuring “L” for the given wheel and fender at SC.

4.Measuring “L” for the given wheel and fender at SD.

5.Measuring “L” for the given wheel and fender at SE.

Clearance “L” obtained at sections SA, SB, SC, SD, SE.

CONCLUSION:
From the above results obtained, we can conclude that the given fender doesn’t pass the European standard for wheel arc area.
SUGGESTIONS TO STYLING TEAM:
The styling team is required to modify the styling surface of the fender such that the clearance “L” at section SA, SC, SD, and SE is equal to or greater than 10mm by increasing the curvature at those section towards outside.
