Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Fender design-Wheel Arch Calculations

Aim:-

To compute the wheel arch area of a specific fender and demonstrate whether the automobile meets European standards.

Introduction:-

A wheel arch is a formed section of the bodywork of an automobile or other vehicle that gives access to the wheel and, in the case of front wheels, steering. It is the semi-circular section located above the vehicle's wheel. It should have enough space between the tyre and the wheel arch to avoid touching the wheel arch area.

If the wheel arch calculation is not performed, it generates additional chipping, which causes significant harm to both the pedestrian and the automobile. The clearance value varies by area and depends on the road condition. The following are some of the requirements that automotive manufacturers adhere to.

Japanese Standards:

1. In all three places, clearance must be higher than 5 mm.

2. Requirement for a wheel guard: The value of 'a' must be more than 5 mm along a line 30 forward and 50 backward from the center vertical axis of the wheel.

European Standards:

1. The clearance value should be larger than 10 mm in all five parts.

2. Wheel guard requirement: The value of 'a' must be more than 10 mm along a line 30 forward and 50 rearward from the wheel's center vertical axis.

US Standards:-

1. All measurements must be greater than 5 mm.

2. Wheel guard requirement: The value of 'a' must be more than 5 mm 30 ahead and 50 rearward of the wheel's centre vertical axis.

Wheel Arch Calculation:

This computation will be performed using European standards in accordance with the instructions in the task to be completed.

The drawing is created on the wheel face and projected onto the wheel arch at sections SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE, and the clearance value is measured at these sections.

At Section SA:

At Section SB:

At Section SC:

At Section SD:-

At Section SE:

Observation table:-

Sections Clearance Measured (mm) Test Result
SA 9.9490 FAIL
SB 10.00 PASS
SC 0.1120 FAIL
SD -1.7690 FAIL
SE -3.5492 FAIL

NOTE:- The negative symbol is utilized because the fender-wheel arch's curvature is descending from the wheel surface.

Conclusion:

The specified model is analyzed in accordance with European requirements, and the preceding table shows that the fender fails to meet European standards in all parts except section SB.
