Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER-WHEEL ARCH CALCULATION
INTRODUCTION:
What is “WHEEL ARCH?”
Wheel arch is one of the BIW components of automotive bodywork in the fender part and it can be defined as the semicircular shaped part that has to be positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender.

Need of “WHEEL ARCH”
Wheel Arch in Fender Design consideration it plays major role to keeps wheel / tyre keeps inside of the wheel housing and it also provides to keep all possible motions of the wheel in a vehicle.
WHEEL ARCH REGULATIONS
Wheel arch it can be vary for region to region and it have specified regulations itself while calculating the wheel arch. And the various types of wheel arch regulations are listed below,
- Japan Regulation
- European Regulation and
- US Regulation
1_JAPAN REGULATION
According to this Japan wheel arch regulation that wheel guard required value should be more than 5 mm at line 30o forward and 50obackward of from the centre axis of wheel.

Fig_2: Japan Regulation
From this japan regulation it has 3 control points and these are SA-SA, SB-SB, AND SC-SC should keep more than 5mm of Clearance length it has to be passing this regulation.
2_EUROPEAN REGULATION
According to this European wheel arch regulation that wheel guard required value should be more than 10 mm at line 30o forward and 50obackward from the wheel centre and we also consider from the 0o line 150 mm of height that interesting point and the inter-maiden of these two points also considered to maintains its clearance length of more than 10 mm.

Fig_3: European Regulation
From this European regulation it has 5 control points and these are SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, and SE-SE should keep 10 mm of the clearance length it has to be passing this regulation.
3_US REGULATION
According to this US regulation check all the clearance length of the wheel arch -100o to 100o of every 10o of its section should keep more than 10 mm of gap it will passing this regulation. In this regulation it has 21 control points itself and all these should maintain the same gap.

FENDER-WHEEL ARCH CALCULATION:
OBJECTIVE:
To calculate the wheel arch from the given fender and also check whether it is has passing the standard regulation.
GIVEN DATA:

CALCULATION:
TOOL USED: NX_12
Assume,
As we consider this given data of fender to made assumption to calculate and check the wheel arch for the “EUROPEAN REGULATION”.
By using NX-12 tool to calculating clearance length of the given fender results of SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, and SE-SE are shown in following as below,

CONCLUSION:
According to the European Regulation thus clearance length of all the 5 control points it keeps more than 10 mm itself. But this given fender may results on its clearance length only SA-SA has 10 mm of gap, and remains all of this SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, and SE-SE may results to fail.
And hence we conclude this fender has not passing in this European Regulation. So that we suggest styling team to keep modify this given fender in wheel arch area to maintaining the clearance gap.
