Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Report-

Fender Wheel Arch Regulation;-

If wheel is outside fender, more will be chipping and thrown off.

For pedestrian safety, to avoid this wheel should be inside fender by some clearance.

Wheel arch has to follow some standard specifications for safety point of view of pedestrians.

This clearance value and points at which clearances should measure, is guided by few Standards.

For deciding the Wheel Arch, there are 3 different regulations namely -

  1. Japanese Regulations
  2. American Regulations
  3. European Regulations.

1, Japan Standards- According to this standard, clearance needed Is 5 mm.

  • From Centre, point marked at 50 deg on right, and 30 degree at left.
  • Same points are projected on the wheel
  • Clearance is measured.

  1. European Regulations-
  • From center of wheel , 1 point at 30 deg left , another point2v on 50 deg right.
  • Point3 – on wheel arch, at dist. 150 mm from ground (horizontal wheel axis.)
  • Point 4 , a point which bisects pt. 2 and Pt 3
  • Clearance at all these points should be 10 mm.

  1. American Standards-

Clearance at points should be 5 mm at every 10 deg, from -20 deg to + 100deg.

Once a styling data is received, wheel center is marked and various points are marked on fender. Same points are projected on wheel. C (clearance between these points) is calculated.

If it is acceptable by the regulations criterion, design is accepted, or it is asked to change the curve to the styling person.

By referring all three regulations, is observed, that a product to be acceptable in various regions in the globe, for wheel arch criterion, European regulations can be referred, so that it will be accepted in other two also.

In this case, I combine Ameriican standards and European Standrads.

For the present case, I divide the fender wheel arch with ref to American Standards. To get maximum angles. Other points are taken with respect to European Standards.

And measure the distances at all points. Distance between Sketch points on datum Plane and Projected points on wheel arch.

This data is tabulated.

Conclusion- Deisgn is not as per European Regulation.
Deisgn is not as per Japanese Regulation.
Deisgn is not as per American Regulation.
Remark- Changes in wheel Arch radius are needed.

Points 1 to 7 are beyond wheel arch surface. Hence they are not required to be consider.

Point 8 to Point 16 are actually representing clearance between Wheel and Wheel Arch.

As only at 2 points, the criterion is matched for European and American Standard.

Conlusion- Design is Fail for wheel arch.

The design need to change by rhe styling perosn.
