Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER DESIGN-WHEEL ARC CHALLENGE
Aim:
To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
Fender:

Fender is a metal or plastic enclosure over the wheels of an automobile or other vehicle to protect against splashing mud, etc.Its primary purpose is to to prevent sand,mud,rocks, liquid,and other road spray from being throw into air by the rotating tire.Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. A fender is the part of a car that protects and frames its wheels and keeps mud from splashing it.
Mainly There are two types of fender:
1.FULL BUMPER TYPE
2.HALF BUMPER TYPE

Fender Mountings:
A fender is mounted on 5 important regions.
1.Drip Area Mounting
2.A pillar Mounting
3.Sill Mounting
4.Bumper Mounting
5.Baffle Mounting

Wheel Arc:
Wheel arch is the semi-circular curve on the fender just above wheels of the car.
For a vehicle to use fender in different countries, the wheel arc of the fender must meet some standard requirements by some countries like Japan Standard,European Standard and US standard.
Japan Standard Requirements:

US Standard Requirements:

European Standard Requirements:

- The clearance "L" as shown in the above fig. at all the five sections SA-SB-SC-SD-SE should be greater than 10 mm to meet the standards in Europe.
- wheel guard requirement: the value of "a" shall be more than 5mm at a line 30 degrees froward and 50 degrees rearward from the center vertical axis of the wheel.
Given input:

here we are going to check with European Standards.
Wheel Arc calculation:

for checking the clearance value a sketch is created as per European Standard.

1.Clearance 'L'
At SB

L=10 at SB
At SA

L=9.94 at SA
At SC

L=0.1139 at SC
At SD

L=2.8875 at SD
At SE

L=5.9973 at SE
2.Clearance 'a'
Clearance 'a' at SB=49.64

Clearance 'a' at SC=43.35

Table 1:
| SECTION | Minimum 'a' Required(mm) | Observed 'a' (mm) | Remarks |
| SB | 5 | 49.64 |
PASS |
| SC | 5 | 43.35 | PASS |
Table 2:
| SECTION | Minimum 'L' Required(mm) | Observed 'L' (mm) | Remarks |
| SB | 10 | 10 | PASS |
| SA | 10 | 9.9490 |
FAIL |
| SC | 10 | -0.1139 | FAIL |
| SD | 10 | -2.8875 | FAIL |
|
SE |
10 |
-5.9973 |
FAIL |
CONCLUSION:
From the above results,the results of clearance 'a' is passing the european requirements but the resuts of clearance value 'L' doesn't meet the european requirements.
Thus from the overall results,the given car fender does not pass through the criteria given for the European standards for wheel arch.
