Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER:
A fender is curved portion of the car's body that sits over and houses the wheel. The purpose of the fender is simple to keep mud, rocks, other debris from beign thrown around by the tyres. In other words, the fender is a housing for the wheels that keeps road debris contained. If there was nothing covering the wheels, all kinds of debris would be kicked up by the rotating tires. The fender not only protects your car from sustaining damage from road debris but it prevents this debris from being thrown up at other vehicles on the road and on the pedistrains.

WHEEL ARCH:
It is a curved shape on the fender exactly at obove the wheels.Different countries have different wheel arch regulations in place, and the wheel arch design has to comply with them to be deemed usable in that country. The concept for the calculation of wheel arc radius is to position the wheel inside the fender body , because during motion the car tyres will tend to throw particles present on the road like sand, mudrocks, liquids etc.
DIFFERENT FENDER WHEEL ARCH REGULATIONS:
JAPANESE REGULATION:

The clearance ‘L’ for tire, hub, cap and fender is to be measured within area K and create clearance check chart to validateThe value of L should be greater than 5mm at all positions.
EUROPEAN REGULATION:

The Clearance ‘L’ should be measured at sections from 30degrees left to till the intersection loine of 150mm .At all the five sections the value of L should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European Regulations.
US REGULATIONS:

The Clearance ‘L’ should be measured at sections from -100 degrees left to till 100 degrees right .At all the five sections the value of L should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the European Regulations.
EURPEAN STANDARD DESIGN:
For calculation of clearance between Wheel Arch and Wheel we have to create a sketch on the outer most face of the wheel.
- First a Datum Plane is created at the outermost face of the wheel
- The sketch is created on the new Datum Plane
- A Horizontal line is drawn across the centre of the wheel
- A perpendicular line at the centre of the wheel
- Two lines are created at 30° left and 50° right respectively
- A point is created 150mm vertically above the centre line
- A line is drawn from the wheel centre and passes from the point created
- Another bisecting line is drawn between the last two lines created.

at 1st point at -30degrees:

at 2nd point 90degrees:

at 3rd point 50 degrees:

AT POINT 4:

AT POINT 5:

TABULAR FORM OF RESULTS:
| POINTS | L(>10) | RESULT |
| 1 | 10 | PASS |
| 2 | 9.949 | FAIL |
| 3 | -0.113 | FAIL |
| 4 | -2.8875 | FAIL |
| 5 | -5.997 | FAIL |
CONCLUSION:
Based upon the results obtained, we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulations, as the minimum clearance L between the Fennder Wheel Arch and wheel is greater than 10mm not maintained so this design does not meet the requirement.
