Challenge

Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Wheel Arch in Fender:-

  • The arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle
  • The fender design must be in such a way that it must shield wheels and protect both the passenger compartment and the pedestrian from mud and water which get projected due to the car's speed.
  • For different countries, the standards for the design are defined by the government.

European Regulations-

  1. The Clearance ‘L’ should be measured at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, and SE-SE and create a clearance check chart to validate
  2. At all five sections, the value of L should be greater than 10mm to satisfy the European Regulations
  3. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel

Given Model-

So we will draw all 5 sections with proper dimensions. First, we will create a datum plane at the outermost surface of the wheel. And sketch all the lines with proper reference and angle. Create 5 points on 5 section lines where it intersects the wheel arch curve of the fender. After finishing the sketch project all 5 points on the wheel arch curve to measure the gap. Do name all sections and give annotations in the required place. So the result will be-

Now we will measure the gap at all 5 sections-

1) SB - 10 mm

2) SA - 9.949 mm

3) SC - 0.1139 mm

4) SD - 2.8875 mm

5) SE - 5.9973 mm

CONCLUSION:-

From the above results, we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European Regulations, as the minimum clearance L between the Fender Wheel Arch and Wheel for vehicle and pedestrian safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
