DESIGN OF FRONT FENDER

OBJECTIVE: To prepare the fender design with drip area, Sill mount, Bumper Mount, and A-Pillar mount using NX CAD.

Follow the given Master section to create the Drip Area

Prepare a proper report with all the relevant images included for the mounting points created.

INTRODUCTION:

FENDER - Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). The primary purpose of the fender is to prevent sand, mud, rock, etc from being thrown away into the air by rotating tires.

There are two types of fenders
1. Full Bumper Type.
2. Half Bumper Type.

Full Bumper type
This type of fender is used in the olden days, it is no more in use due to its heavyweight structure and consumes more raw material in manufacturing.

Half Bumper Type
Half Bumper Type fenders are widely used now, due to their mini size and the scrap or wastage is less compared to the full bumper type.

Fender is mounted basically on 5 important regions. They are
1. Drip Area
2. A-Pillar Mounting Area
3. Sill Mounting Area
4. Bumper Mounting Area
5. Baffle Mounting Area

Drip Area-
Drip area mounting is an important part of the fender, at which the fender gets attached to the engine housing through fasteners. It is the major mounting for the fender. Mountings at the drip area are designed to leave a clearance of 200mm from the back of the fender for the cowl setup. And clearance of 150mm from the front of the fender for a headlamp housing unit.

this mounting is attached to the engine compartment of the car. fender drip area is mounted via weld nuts to the engine compartment. a min of 150mm distance is kept from the front side and a distance of 200mm or less can be kept on the rear side. The total length of the drip area from the top of the fender should be less than 40mm, this is to avoid the spring back during the manufacturing. the edge of the mounting should be at least 10mm away from any nearby component in the engine. A rigidity bead is provided at the end to increase the strength of the mounting.

Darts are provided at the bends to stiffen the sheet metal at that region.

A-pillar area -

The A-pillar area mounting depends upon the A-pillar of the car. the mounting can also be provided with ribs to strengthen the part. this mounting is critical in design as it has to be mounted on A-pillar properly.

This Mounting region is located near the cowl of the vehicle where the fender is fastened to the bottom edge of the windshield. This mounting is covered with the side rear-view mirror.

Baffle Mount area-

In this region, the baffle gets installed to the fender with the help of clips that holds the baffle with the fender along the wheel arch.

Sill area -

Sill area mounting is also an important mounting part .this mounting point is basically on the bottom of the fender. the mounting part should be created such that the fender is firmly attached to the sill.

Bumper Mounting Area -

The bumper mounting region is located beneath the bumper. The fender gets attached before the installation of the bumper. After fixing the fender with fasteners the bumper will cover the bumper mounting.

HERE ARE MORE IMAGES OF FENDER.

Conclusion -
The Fender is designed with the necessary mounting points considering the design parameters.
