Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Wheel Arch Calculation
ABSTRACT:
To calculate the wheel arch of the Front Fender of a car by using the various parameters available to us.
INTRODUCTION:
Front fender is the part that extends between the front door to the front bumper covering front wheels of the of the vehicle. The major function of the Front Fender is to give an aesthetic look as well as to protect the engine compartment of the vehicle.
TYPES:
- Full Bumper Type
- Half Bumper Type
Full Bumper Type:
It is an old method which isn’t used anymore as it is heavy and occupies a bigger space.

Half Bumper Type:
The most used type where it is only half in size and very easy to replace.

STANDARDS:
Different standards are followed in different regions of the world which are based upon various parameters of that particular region. The three main standards are,
- Japanese Standard
- European Standard
- American Standard
Japanese Standard:
The clearance length L of the Tire, hub, cap and Fender are measured in three different positions with area K, clearance check chart is done for validation.
The positions are taken as 90-degree, 30-degree towards the left and 50-degree towards the right.
According to Japanese standards the gap of A, B and C should be 5mm, that is the gap from the fender to the tire should be 5mm.

European Standard:
The clearance sections are divided into 5 sections namely SA, SB, SC, SD, SE. This is done by dividing the 30-degree towards the left and 50-degree towards the right and now SE is created by drawing a line at 150mm above the line and the intersection is SE, and now SD is derived by dividing SE and SC in Half.
The Clearance L is measured from these 5 points and the value should be 10mm.

American Standard:
Make clearance points on all positions from -20 degree to 190 degree. Each value to have 10 degree gap, now clearance L is measured from these points, it should have a value greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulation.

EUROPEAN STANDARD EXAMINATION:
To examine the given part using european standards,
1. SA clearance = 9.9727, required clearance = 10
Passes the requirement = No

2. SB clearance = 10, required clearance = 10
Passes the requirement = Yes

3. SC clearance = 2.9654, required clearance = 10
Passes the requirement = No

4. SD clearance = 0.222776, required clearance = 10
Passes the requirement = No

5. SE clearance = 3.1426, required clearance = 10
Passes the requirement = No

CONCLUSION:
We have learnt about the Front fender and how to calculate the wheel arch using different standards. We have also learnt about the types of front fenders.
Thus the above given part has failed the european standards, it should be modified to match the requirement of european standards.
