Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

1) Wheel Arch:-

• Wheel arch is the semi circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of vehicle.
• The design of wheel arch of fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers and pedestrains from projection of water ,mud, stone.
• For the vehicle to has its use permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fender must be complain with the standards and regulation set by respective countries.
• Design satisfies based on government of their particular country also depend on the speed of vehicle.

2) Objective:-

• The main objective of the wheel arch challenge is to calculate the wheel arch area and prove whether the given fender of car will pass european standard or not.

3) European standards for wheel arch:-

• The clearance "L" as shown in above figure at all the five sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD & SE-SE should be greater than 10mm.
• Wheel guard requirement:- The value of "a" shall be more than 5mm at a line 30degree forward and 50degree rearward from centre vertical axis of wheel.

4)Obtaining result:-

Software:- NX 12

Sketch is drawn on the wheel face as per the european standards provided and projected on the wheel arch at sections AB, BC, CD, DE & EF to measure "L","a" and wheel arch area.

A. Obtaining the value of clearance "L"

• Measuring "L" value for given wheel and fender at 'AB' is 10mm.
• Section 'AB'
• Clearance: 10=10
• Comment: PASS

• Measuring "L" value for given wheel and fender at 'BC' is 9.94=10mm.
• Section 'BC'
• Clearance: 9.94≅10=10
• Comment: PASS

• Measuring "L" value for given wheel and fender at 'CD' is 0.11mm.
• Section 'CD'
• Clearance: 0.1126<10
• Comment: FAIL

• Measuring "L" value for given wheel and fender at 'DE' is 4.05 mm.
• Section 'CD'
• Clearance: 4.052<10
• Comment: FAIL

• Measuring "L" value for given wheel and fender at 'EF' is 9.59 mm.
• Section 'CD'
• Clearance: 9.595<10
• Comment: FAIL

B. Obtaining the value of clearance "a" for wheel guard requirement

• At section 'AB'
• Finding the value of "a" at 30 degree forward from centre vertical axis of wheel is 43.62mm.
• Clearance: 43.62>5
• Comment: PASS

• At section 'CD'
• Finding the value of "a" at section 'CD' 50 degree rearward from centre vertical axis of wheel is 38.35mm.
• Clearance: 38.35>5
• Comment: PASS

5) Conclusion:-

• From the above result obtained, i concluded that given fender doesn't pass the european standard for wheel arch area.
