Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Aim:
To calculate the wheel arch area of the given fender model and validate whether the fender design pases the European Standards or not.
Introduction:
Fender is a metal or plastic enclosure over the wheels of an automobile or other vehicle to protect against splashing mud, etc.
Wheel arch is an arch-shaped cavity in the body of a vehicle, which houses a wheel ande and in the case of front wheels, enable them to be steered. The design of Wheel arch of a fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers' compartment and pedestrians from projection of water, mud and stones.

Also, wheel arch is semi-circular edge of the fender which houses wheel-well. The wheel arch gives access to the wheel and other components attached to it
There are various standards across different countries for the wheel arch area to be satisfied as below,
- U.S standard
- Japan Standard.
- European standard.
In this report we will be taking European standard into consideration.
U.S standards:

- The minimum clearance should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations.
Japanese standards:

- The value of L should be greater than 5mm at all positions
European standard:
- The minimum clearance at all the points should be equal or greater than 10mm between the fender and wheel.
Given Model:

Procedure:
- Create a Datum plane normal to the outermost surface or edge of the wheel.

- Click sketch ans create the SB, SC, SD, SC and SA lines accordingly.

- Project the arch as shown below.
- Trim the lines with repsect to the projected profile.

- Now Exit the sketch once all the lines are created.
- Click Measure distance in analysis tab to calculate the various values required.
- SA Distance:

- SB Distance:

- SC Distance:

- SD Distance:

- SE Distance:

Here the SC, SD, and SD are in negative directions due to design of the fender.
Comparison with European Standard:
| Sections | Standard | Actual Clearance | Result |
| SA | 10mm | 9.9489 mm | FAIL |
| SB | 10mm | 10 mm | PASS |
| SC | 10mm | -0.1136 mm | FAIL |
| SD | 10mm | -2.8817 mm | FAIL |
| SE | 10mm | -5.9755 mm | FAIL |
Conclusion:
By comparing the values obtained from the European standard value, It is observed and concluded that the fender model fails to meet the requirements at SA, SC, SD and SE locations. The model should be altered and corrected to meet the quirements.
