Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
AIM: The Fender Wheel Arc regulations and their design is created as per the European standards and its regulation calculations are maintained according to the design method.
WHEEL ARC AREA:
- Wheelarch area is a gap between the outer edge of the fender to the outer edge of the wheel. It is an important design consideration for the fender design because of pedestrian safety. While driving the car on the road there are some particles like small stones, water, mud, etc. Which comes in contact with the grip of the tire and throwback towards the backside. The force is so high that it damages the car's body if the wheel is outside of the outer edge of the fender.
- In order to avoid this problem the wheel is mainly placed inside the wheel arch area, for this, we follow various standards of wheel arch in different regions.
JAPAN REQUIREMENTS FOR WHEEL ARC DESIGN:
- Measure clearance L of the tire, hub, cap, and fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate
- Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all three positions.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a 30 degree forward and 50 degrees rearward from the central vertical axis to the axis of the wheel.
EUROPEAN REQUIREMENTS FOR WHEEL ARC DESIGN:
- Measure CL L at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.
- At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of 'a' shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees rearward from the central vertical axis to the axis of the wheel.

U S REQUIREMENTS FOR WHEEL ARC DESIGN:
- Make clearance check details on all positions from -100 degrees to 100 degrees and make the clearance check table.
- All values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations.
- Wheel guard requirement: The value of 'a' shall be more than at a line 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees rearward from the central vertical axis to the axis of the wheel.
The above diagram shows the description of measurements of different points. Similarly, I have checked the measurements of different values and the results are shown below:

AFTER MEASUREMENTS FOUND THE GAP AT 5 DIFFERENT POINTS:

THE FINAL IMAGES OF THE WHEEL ARC CENTRE IS SHOWN IN BELOW FIGURE:

CONCLUSION:
Therefore we can see that only one value is 1 which satisfy European standards hence the conclusion is that the given design can not be permitted for further approval and for passing fender design we have to do some adjustments and changes in the curve of the fender so that at least minimum of 10 mm gap should be there between fender arc and wheel surface.
