Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
WHEEL ARCH AREA CALCULATION
AIM
To find the wheel arch area and check whether the given fender design complies with the European standards.
GIVEN DATA
- Model of front fender and wheel.
- European standard values for fender arch area calculation.
FENDER
Fender is a part of car, truck, motor cycle or other vehicles that frames or covers wheels well. Its main purpose is to prevent debris, rocks, muds, liquids, sand and other road debris from getting thrown in the air during the tire rotates. And the other main purpose is to shield the wheels and protect the passengers and pedestrians.

WHEEL ARCH AREA
Wheel arch is an integrated part of an fender assembly . It is a semi circular part which is positioned above on the vehicle. In some countries its also called as the inner fender.Wheel arc area is the area between the outer most curve of the fender to the wheel. We can see and determine this if we see the wheel from front and backside of the wheel of a car

WHEEL ARCH AREA REGULATIONS
The wheel arch area is varries region to region depends upon their road conditions.
- EUROPEAN regulations
- US regulations
- JAPAN regulations
( HERE I AM GOING TO CONSIDER THE EUROPEAN REGULATION)
EUROPEAN REGULATIONS

CONDITIONS
- L -> GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 10mm ( HORIZONTAL CLEARANCE BETWEEN TIRE AND FENDER)
- a -> GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 5mm ( VERTICAL CLEARANCE BETWEEN TIRE AND FENDER)
PROCEDURE TO CALCULATING ARCH AREA
1) To make the centre point of the wheel .
2) To draw a vertical and horizontal lines through the center point.
3) To offsetting the horizontal line to the upward direction to 150mm gap
4) Draw the 30 degree and 50 degree lines to the right and left side of the vertical lines
5) Make the points where the all lines and fender upper most curves are intersected.
6) Draw a derrived line inbetween the third and fourth point .
7) Now we got SA,SB,SC,SD,SE and project the all points on the fender.
8) Measure the clearance value (L) between the intersected point to the projected point and note the values
9) Compare the measured values with the standard regulations and check the clearance at the area is pass or fail.
10) To create the intesection point between the 30degree and 50degree line to the outer edge of the tire.
11) Find the value of (a), measure the value between the intersecting points of the both the 30&50 degree angle lines to the fender and outer curve of the wheel.
12) Compare the value with standard value and check it.
1)' L'value at SA

2) 'L' value at SB
3)' L' value at SC

4)' L' value at SD

5)' L' value at SE

6)'a'value in 30degree line ( SA')

7) 'a' value at 50degree line (SC')

COMPARISION TABLE ' L'
| S.No | SECTION | REQUIRED CLEARANCE IN mm | MEASURED CLEARANCE IN mm | REMARKS |
| 1 | SA | 10 | 10.00 | PASS |
| 2 | SB | 9.9490 | FAIL | |
| 3 | SC | 0.1139 | FAIL | |
| 4 | SD | 2.8875 | FAIL | |
| 5 | SE | 5.9973 | FAIL |
COMPARISION TABLE FOR 'a'
| S.No | SECTION | REQUIRED CLEARANCE IN mm | MEASURED CLEARANCE IN mm | REMARKS |
| 1 | SA' | 5 | 48.6263 | PASS |
| 2 | SC' | 43.3597 | PASS |
SUGGESTION
- In horizontal clearance Only the section SA is satisfies the European regulation. Rest of all other area failed to satisfy so need to improve those area's.
- In vertical clearance both the points are satisfy the European standards.
CONCLUSION
The wheel gap arch is calculated at the required points and checked with the European standards.
