Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

REPORT ON WHEEL ARCH

Objective: To measure the clearance between fender wheel arch and wheel outermost edge.

Wheel Arch

Wheel arches are the semicircular part of a vehicle's bodywork that allows for the wheels to be accessed. In other words, it's the metal part above the wheel. The wheel arch is an integrated part of a fender assembly. Wheel arches are also known as mud guards as they act to prevent dirt and other substances from getting up onto the vehicle itself.

European Regulation:

European Regulation Requirement:

  • The value of ‘L’ should be greater than 10 mm at all five sections to satisfy the European regulations.
  • The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm at SB and SC.

CONCLUSION:

The obtained value clearance does not satisfy the European standard regulation except the SB and SC which is 10mm. Hence the engineer has to change the curvature of the fender.
