Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

AIM:

Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

WHEEL ARCH:

wheel arc is an arch-shaped cavity in the body of a vehicle, which houses a wheel. its dimension is bigger than the tyre dimension, so that it covers the upper tyre portion.

wheel arch is having some standard specifications because, when we see see our car from the front side, if the wheel is outside the fender, it does the more chipping , and it causes damages to the pedestrain and also to the car, so to hav ethe pedestrain safetyin mind, we will have to position the tyre in such manner, that the wheel is inside the fender,

Its also purpose is to prevent sand , mud, dust, rocks , liquid, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyre.

Several countries have their own wheel arch standard conditions, these conditions of calculating wheel arch lengths, its totally depend upon their road conditons.

example.

1. JAPAN REQUIREMENT :

  1. Length is greater than or equal to 5 mm.
  2. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30˚ forward and 50˚ rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

2. EUROPEAN REGULATIONS REQUIREMENT :

Length is greater than or equal to 10 mm.

3. US REGULATION REQUIREMENT

  1. Length is greater than or equal to 5 mm.
  2. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm 30˚ forward and 50˚ rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

now, calculating the wheel arcH by european standards .

procedure :

1. draw a datum line from the upper surface of the wheel.

2. draw a sketch from the datum plane which we have created , in that 5 lines draw according to european standards, then project curve , in addition to this draw a intersection point , which line and wheel arch curve ,then finsh the sketch

3. project the curve in the 3d , in the wheel arc surface , the point which we have created.

4. measure the distance , point and the wheel arch curve for the clearance L.

A. OBTAINING THE VALUE OF CLEARENCE Length L ( HORIZONTAL DIMENSION ). ALONG Z AXIS.

1. Measuring L at given WHEEL ARCH and fender at SB

2. Measuring L at given WHEEL ARCH and fender at SA

3. Measuring L at given WHEEL ARCH and fender at SC

4. Measuring L at given WHEEL ARCH and fender at SD

5. Measuring L at given WHEEL ARCH and fender at SE

IN A TABULAR FORM ALL THE VALUES OF CLEARANCE ( L ) .

TABLE 1 :

SECTION Required Clearance Value (mm) Observed Clearance Value (mm) Result
SB 10 10 Passed
SA 10 9.9489 Failed
SC 10 - 0.125703 Failed
SD 10 - 2.8452 Failed
SE 10 - 5.908 Failed

B) OBTAINING THE VALUE OF CLARENCE A WHEEL GURD REQVIRMENT , this should be greater than 5 mm

1. finding the value at a line 30 degree forword from the centre vertical axis = 43.6413 mm

2. the value at a line 50 degree rearword from center = 38.3962 mm

TABLE 2:

clearence at SB and SA ( THESE values should be greater than 5 mm )

SECTION ANGLE CLEARENCE A (MM) RESULTS
SB 30 DEGREE 43.6413 PASSED
SA 50 DEGREE 38.3962 PASSED

CONCLUSION:

now, we can conclude from table 1 ,that positions SA SC SD SE are less than 10mm which is necessary to pass the European standards. Hence, the front fender wheel arch does not pass the European standard.

AND in table 2 , the l WHEEL GUARD REQUIREMENT , THE value of A shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central vertical axis of the axis of wheel, and after the calculating distance , the result is pass according to the european standards.
