Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Wheel Arch:-

Wheel Arch is the semicircular part of the fender which is located just above the wheel.

Wheel arch has its significant role in the designing of the car. The Arch is designed in order to safe the car BIW and the pedestrian from the mud, road particles, road side dirt and the pebbles to hit the inner engine and to the outside pedestrian.

Wheel Arch

Wheel Arch designs have to be according to the prescribed standards accepted in the different countries these are

  1. American Standard

  2. European Standard

  3. Japan Standard

According to this project requirement we are following the European Standard Laws.

For this project i was provided a set of fender and wheel specimen model and in that i was to find the minimum gap b/w the fender arch and the wheel outer surface then check it according to the Europe Standard that the part is in accordance with the European Laws.

To create those line we need to simply draw the sketc on the wheel outermost frontal face and then we need to include the wheel arch curve as shown in the fig. then the four quadrants are drawn then the lines SB, SA, SC, SE needed are drawn through the arch curve.SD is created as a angle bisector of the both SC and SE.The point obtained on the SE is derived from the horizontal xaxis at a distance of 150 from it.

1. The clearance "L" as shown in above fig at all the five sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD and SE-SE should be greater than 10

mm.

2. Wheel Guard Requirement: The value of "a" shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30° forward and 50° rearward from centre vertical

axis of the wheel.

Results Obtained:-

SA

SA Distance = 9.9490mm

SB

SB Distance= 10.000mm

SC

SC Distance = -1139mm

SD

SD Distance=-2.8875mm

SE

SE Distance=-5.9973mm

Observations in Tabular form:-

Hence all the observation has been completed and the required clearance which is needed is told to the styling department for the necessary corrections in the fender.
