Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Wheel Arc

Wheel arch is an arch-shaped cavity in the body of a vehicle, which houses a wheel. For this purpose protective fender guards were created that are assembled in the wheel arch.

Purpose of Wheel Arc:

• Wheel Arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.

• The design of Wheel arch of a fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers

compartment and pedestrians from projection of water, mud and stones,

For the vehicle to has its use permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulations set by the respective countries.

Objective of Wheel Arc challenge:

Using the Europian Standard. Calculate the Wheel Arc area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or Not.

European standard - Wheel Arc:

Rules –
1. Measure of CL L is done on sections SA, SB , SC, SD, SE.
2. At all sections the value of CL L should be greater that 10mm.
3. Wheel guard requirement -: The value of a shall be more that 5mm at 300 forward and 500 rearward from the
central axis of wheel.

Result for Wheel Arc:

Sketch done as per European standard

SB Values - 10mm

SA Values - 10 mm

SC Value - (-0.113)

SD Value - 2.87 mm

SE Value -(-5.953)

Section Clearance of "L" in mm Result
SB 10<10 Pass
SA 10<10 Pass
SC -0.113<10 Fail
SD -2.87<10 Fail
SE -5.953<10 Fail

Result:

While calculating the wheel arc for various section it is observed that the section SB & SA Passes the clearance regulations but the sections SC, SD & SE are failing the european standards.

Conclusion:

The given wheel arc is doesn't passes in European standard.
