Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

OBJECTIVE : To calculate the clearance between wheel arch and wheel and check whether the clearance provided to the car as per the EUROPEAN STANDARD.

Before checking the clearance we should know about wheel arch and criteria used as per European standard.

Wheel arch : It is the semi circular arch situated just above the wheel on the fendre the main purpose of it to gaurd the pedestrian and the components of the car situated near to the wheel from the projection of mud, dirt, small stones due to the rolling of the wheel of the car.

If the wheel is protruding outside from the fendre (as you can see from the front side and the top side) it will cause more chipping of the components situated on the neighbourhood of the wheel also it will cause much more harm to the pedestrian as well.

So, to ensure the safety of the pedestrian it must follow some standards and these standards vary according to the locations here we follow the safety standards as per EUROPEAN STANDARD as this is more versatile as we can sell it to different regions as it covers all the safety requirements of the car.

AS PER EUROPEAN STANDARD :

CHECKING THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN WHEEL AND FENDER AS PER EUROPEN STANDARD:

ASSUMPTIONS---> 1) WITH RESPECT TO THE WHEEL--> DISTANCE MEASURED ALONG INWARD Z AXIS CONSIDER NEGATIVE

2) WITH RESPECT TO THE WHEEL ----> DISTANCE MEASURED ALONG OUTWARD Z AXIS CONSIDER POSITIVE

a) Checking of clearance of SB-SB section :

HERE FOR WHEEL GAURD REQUIREMENT VALUE OF 'a' = 10mm > 5mm ----> ( criterion fulfill)

b) Checking of clearance of SA-SA section :

HERE THE CLEARANCE 'L' BETWEEN WHEEL AND WHEEL ARCH = 9.9490mm < 10mm -------> (CRITERION FAILED)

c) Checking of clearance of SC-SC section :

HERE FOR WHEEL GAURD REQUIREMENT VALUE OF 'a' = -0.1139 mm < 5mm -----> ( CRITERION FAILED)

d) Checking of clearance of SD-SD section :

HERE THE CLEARANCE 'L' BETWEEN WHEEL AND WHEEL ARCH = -1.9809 mm < 10mm -------> (CRITERION FAILED)

e) Checking of clearance of SE-SE section :

HERE THE CLEARANCE 'L' BETWEEN WHEEL AND WHEEL ARCH = -4.0077 mm < 10mm -------> (CRITERION FAILED)

Conclusion : I have measured the clearance value at 5 different points on;y one point among all the 5 points satisfy the criteria as we can see from the table therefore this styling surface provided to us failed as per european regulations hence we have to modify the clearance as per the EUROPEAN STANDARD.
