Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
AIM :-
To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.
OBJECTIVE :-
Study the Wheel Arch area and prove whether the car will pass the standards or not using European regulations.
THEORY :-

- The Wheel Arch is a curved/semicircular part in the fender body which is positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.
- The space between wheel and wheel arch in fender is called as a wheel arch gap.
- Wheel arch is designed in such a way that it protects both the pedestrian as well as car cabin from mud, sand, rocks, etc from chipping of the car body. because when the vehicle is in running condition tyres will tend to throw particles present on the road like sand, mudrocks, liquids etc into the air which may harm the pedestrians and cause problems.
- Different countries have different wheel arch regulations due to the conditions of the road.
- We consider the maximum values of the concerned regulation parameters are taken for design purpose.

EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:
- The clearence L' should be measured at section SA-SA, SB -SB, SC- SC, SD-SD AND SE-SE and then create the clearence chart for the validation
- At all the five sections the value of L should be greater than 10 mm to satisfy the european standards
- Wheel guard requirements are the value of 'a' should be more than 10 mm atline 30 deg and 50 deg rewards from the central vertical plane.
CALCULATION ACCORDING TO EUROPEAN STANDARDS:

- A horizontal and vertical axis is drawn from the centre of the wheel
- The vertical axis intersection point is labelled as 'A'.
- Similar reference are drawn at 30 deg to left and 50 deg to the right side of the vertical axis created as shown in the fig below and named it as 'B' and 'C'.
- A line of 150 mm perpendicular to the horizontal axis and normal from the normal point of fender which gives point 'E'
- And create a midpoint of the arc cut by the section C and E results in a new section 'D'.
- The value of 'L' at each sections andvalue of 'a' are found out to determine whether the fender satisfies the european standards.

MEASUREMENT OF POINTS (SA) (SB) (SC) (SD) (SE)
REQUIRED LENGTH 10MM 10MM 10MM 10MM 10MM
ACTUAL LENGTH 9.949MM 10MM 0.133MM 2.88MM 5.902MM
RSULTS Fail pass fail fail fail
CONCLUSION :-
Here, the negative sign indicates that the wheel arch is out of fender.
Hence by looking at the results obtained above, it can be concluded that the car will not pass the required standards in Europian Region.
