Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

CHALLENGE 5

FEENDER WHEEL ARC CALCULATION

AIM:

To Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and checking whether the car passes the European standard.

WHEEL ARC:

The wheel arch is the semi - circular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle. The most important body change was that the front wheel arch was cut higher into the fender.

  • The wheel arch is an arch-shaped cavity in the body of a vehicle, which houses a wheel. It has two important functions.
  • It serves for the safety of pedestrians and other cars because the wheel is situated in the body of a vehicle.
  • The second function is to protect the car from the sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects.

WHEEL ARC REGULATIONS:

JAPAN REGULATIONS:

  • Measure clearance L of tire, hub, cap & fender in three different positions within area K and produce clearance check chart to validate.
  • Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all the three positions.
  • Wheel guard requirement: The value of a shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30" forward and 50 rear ward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:

  • Measure CL L at sections SA-SA SB-SB SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE and produce CL check chart to validate.
  • At all five sections the CL L value should be greater than or equal to 10 mm to satisfy the European regulations.
  • Wheel guard requirement: The value of A shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

US REGULATIONS:

  • Make clearance check details on all positions from -100* to 100* & make the clearance check table.
  • All values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations. The value of A shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50*.
  • Rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.

FENDER WHEEL ARC CALCULATION:

BASED ON EUROPEAN REGULATIONS:

  • All the regulations is shown in above and this analysis has been done according to the European regulations.
  • Find the clearance values at the required sections. And the A value should be more than 5 mm at a line of 30 deg.
  • Create a plane at the middle of the wheel using on curve option. And create a sketch.
  • Draw the horizontal at 180 deg and vertical at 90 deg this is SA. Using this vertical line draw the lines at 30 deg at left side this is SB and 50 deg at right side this is SC.
  • Create a point on the fender curve at 150 mm distance from the horizontal line. Create a line on this point this is SE
  • Create point between created point and the 50 deg line draw the line and this is SD.
  • Project the points on the fender surface use the single surface only. Find the values
  • The creation is shown in below.

CLEARENCE VALUE AT SECTION SA – SA:

  • The clearance value is at section SA – SA is 9489 mm.

CLRARANCE VALUE AT SECTION SB – SB:

  • The clearance value at section SB – SB is 10 mm

.

CLEARANCE VALUE AT SECTIO SC – SC:

  • Clearance value at section SC – SC is 1126 mm.

CLEARANCE VALUE AT SECTIO SD – SD:

  • The clearance value is at section SD – SD is 4473 mm.

CLEARANCE VALUE IS AT SECTIO SE – SE:

  • The clearance value is at section SE – SE is 9018 mm.

MEASURING THE CLEARANCE VALUE A FOR WHEEL GUARD REQUIREMENT:

The wheel guard requirement value ‘a’ should be greater than 5mm at a line of 30 degree forward and 50-degree rearward line from the central vertical axis of wheel.

CONCLUSION:

From the above result we can conclude that the minimum clearance ‘L’ between the Fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle should be > 10mm and this design does not meet the European Regulation requirements. This fender does not passes the European regulations.
