Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
OBJECTIVE
To calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the fender passes the European standard.
GIVEN DESIGN

EUROPEAN REGULATIONS REQUIREMENT

PROCEDURE
- Create a plane tangent to the outer surface of the wheel.

- Draw horizontal and vertical perpendicular axes from the center of the wheel circle.
- Draw lines at 30 degrees and 50 degrees from the center.
- Draw a line at 150mm from the horizontal.
- Use the derived curve to create a line between a 50-degree line and a 150-mm line.
- Create intersection points and project the point on Fender to measure the distances.

- The vertical distances between the points on the wheel circle and fender curve should be greater than 10mm to satisfy European regulations.
- Also, the horizontal distances from the wheel to the fender curve at SA, SB, SC, SD, and SE points should be at least 5mm.
At SA-SA
25.992 mm > 10 mm

Horizontal clearance = 9.9490 mm > 5 mm
At SB-SB
vertical clearance = 43.6263 mm > 10 mm
Horizontal clearance = 10 mm > 5 mm
At SC-SC
vertical clearance = 38.3597 mm > 10 mm
Horizontal clearance = -0.1139 mm > 5 mm
At SD-SD
vertical clearance = 46.0228 mm > 10 mm
Horizontal clearance = -5.0069 mm > 5 mm
At SE-SE
vertical clearance = 55.8715 mm > 10 mm
Horizontal clearance = -10.8441 mm > 5 mm
TABULAR DATA
| VERTICAL CLEARANCE | DISTANCE | RESULT (if >10 mm) |
|---|---|---|
| SA-SA | 25.992 | PASS |
| SB-SB | 43.6263 | PASS |
| SC-SC | 38.3597 | PASS |
| SD-SD | 46.0228 | PASS |
| SE-SE | 55.8715 | PASS |
| HORIZONTAL CLEARANCE | DISTANCE | RESULT (if >5 mm) |
|---|---|---|
| SA-SA | 9.9490 | PASS |
| SB-SB | 10 | PASS |
| SC-SC | -0.1139 | FAIL |
| SD-SD | -5.0069 | FAIL |
| SE-SE | -10.8441 | FAIL |
CONCLUSION
Out of 5 clearances along the horizontal direction, the fender passes only 2. Hence the Fender fails the European Regulations Requirements. There must be changes made to the fender class A surface towards the rearward section to comply with the standards.
