Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

FENDER DESIGN WHEEL ARCH DESIGN

INTENT :

To Study the Wheel Arch area and prove whether the car will pass the EUROPEAN standards or not

SOFTWARE USED :

CATIA V5

INTRODUCTION :

The fender is the side closing component for the engine compartment. Its major role is to avoid chipping sand, small stones, and mud particles inside the engine compartment when the wheels rotate. Fender also plays a major role to prevent injuries for pedestrians. Basically, we have two types of Fender half bumper type and full bumper type. The difference between the two types is its size. Raw material usage plays a major role and so half bumper is economical. Drip area and wheel arch are the two important things to be considered while designing Fender

The function of the wheel arch is to protect from mud, and stone and during accidents help pedestrians and consider wrap-around distance for head impact. It is found in the distance from the outermost tire to the L-shaped brackets in the fender and helps to determine the range of SRL. Different countries have different standards and regulations for compliance with the wheel arch of fenders, which means the vehicle's use permit requires it to comply with those standards.

Thus, we can see that standards and regulations vary from country to country.

  • Japanese regulation
  • European regulation
  • US regulation

Wheel Arch :

There are standards all over the world for the wheel arch of a car. From country to country they will fix a certain regulation considering the infrastructure available in their country. Basically when the wheel is seen from the front side and if it was outside the car the chipping will be more and that causes damage to the engine compartment and the pedestrians

JAPANESE REGULATION :

In Japanese regulation, the clearance ‘L’ for tire, hub, cap, and fender is to be measured within area K, and create a clearance check chart to validate. The value of L should be more excellent than 5mm at all positions.

Wheel guard requirement :

The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

EUROPEAN REGULATION :

The Clearance ‘L’ should be measured at sections SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, and SE-SE and create a clearance check chart to validate all five sections, the value of L should be greater than 10mm to satisfy European Regulations. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel.

If the curvature clearance is not matching the standards then the model needs to be modified accordingly

US REGULATION :

In US regulation, the clearance ‘L’ is to be checked at all positions from -100° to 100°. Degree divided into 100 and draw a line The value of L should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulations. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ should be more than 5mm at line 30° forward and 50° rearwards from the central vertical axis of the wheel

ANALYSIS :

The part file was opened using CATIA V5 and the aforementioned points was plotted on the wheel arch after taking the required measurements from the Wheel center

The value of clearance at SA at the center &SB SC should be more than 10mm at the line 30deg forward and 50deg reward from the central vertical axis of the wheel. here we have made 2 points to be measured which will be SD& SE also more than 10mm

TABLE 1 :

SECTION Minimum 'a' Required(mm) Observed 'a' (mm) Remarks
SB 5 43.642

PASS

SC 5 38.36 PASS

TABLE 2 :

SECTION Minimum 'L' Required(mm) Observed 'L' (mm) Remarks
SB 10 10 PASS
SA 10 -9.95

FAIL

SC 10 -0.114 FAIL
SD 10 -2.888 FAIL

SE

10

-5.997

FAIL

RESULT :

From the above results, the results of clearance 'a' is passing the European requirements but the results of clearance value 'L' doesn't meet the European requirements. Thus from the overall results, the given car fender does not pass through the criteria given for the European standards for wheel arch Other four points are less than the required value we need to change the design.
