Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
Fender Design-Wheel Arch Challenge
Objective: Calculate the wheel arc area using the Europian standards and prove whether given car fender will pass the standard or not.
Explanations:
Fender:
A fender is an automotive component that protects and frames a vehicle's wheels and keeps mud from splashing them. Fenders are seen on the front wheels of the majority of modern cars. Fenders are mounted on the sides of the vehicle and frame the wheel well to keep objects from being thrown into the air by rotating wheels.
Its purpose is to safeguard the tyres from kicking up mud, gravel, and other road debris. If there was nothing covering the wheels, the rotating tyres would kick up all kinds of debris. The fender not only protects your automobile from road debris, but it also stops this debris from being thrown up at other vehicles or pedestrians on the road. This is why cars with massive, oversized tyres are frequently required by law to have fender flares installed.

Wheel Arch:
It is a curved component of the fender that is positioned just above the automobile wheel. Its design adheres to regional standards/regulations in order to protect both pedestrians and automobile cabins from mud, water, rocks, and other spray depending on road conditions.
Fender wheel arc regulation for European regulation:

- The clearence 'L' must be greater than 10mm for the specified section, such as SA,SB,SC,SD, and SE mentioned in the above figure.
- The distance between tyre upper portion to fender arc 'a' must be 5mm on the line of SA,SB and SC.
The calculation of clearence distance 'L' for the given design as per the european standard
Given model

Steps Followed:
- Creat a datum plane on the wheel outer section
- Mark a line from the wheel centre to the constructed datum plane, as indicated in the image above, and then follow the specified angles for SB and SA and distance.
- The SD line is drawn in the middle of SC and SE line.
- Measure the required distance.
Different section and calculated distance for SA,SB,SC,SD,and SE, and it must be equal to or Greater than then 10 mm.

The calculation of clearence distance 'a' for wheel gaurd requirement to the given design as per the european standard which is equal to or greater then 5 mm.

Results
| Section | L, Greater then 10mm | Results | a, greater than 5mm | Results |
| SA-SA | 10 | Pass | 48.63 | Pass |
| SB-SB | 9.94 | Fail | 30.99 | Pass |
| SC-SC | -0.1130 | Fail | 43.35 | Pass |
| SD-SD | -2.3266 | Fail | ||
| SE-SE | -6.60 | Fail |
Conclusion:
According to the above results, the provided fender design is not recommended for production since the clearence distance is less than 10 mm in four sections, which is less than the standard value.
