Section Modulus calculation and optimization
Objective: Section modulus calculation and optimization for the hood design.
Introduction:
The “section modulus” is the ratio of the moment of inertia of any part/component, related to the natural axis of the cross section to the distance from the natural axis to the outer most surface of the that system. It is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of any flexural member.
The equation of the section of modulus is:
S=I/Y
Where:
S = section modulus
I = moment of the area of the cross-section (Take the minimum value)
Y = distance from the natural axis to the most outer surface.
Our design- "hood cross-section"

Values for the existing model obtained from the NX-CAD tool

Calculation for the above cross-section :
Section modulus S = I/Y
Here:
Imin = 7.433x1003 mm4
Y= 488.859/2=244.43 mm
S=30.40 mm3
Values for the modified model obtained from the NX-CAD tool

Calculation :
Section modulus S = I/Y
Here:
Imin = 7.629x1003 mm4
Y= 488.859/2=244.43 mm
S=31.21 mm3
Conclusion: By increasing the cross-section area of the system, moment of inertia can be improved which results in higher value of the section modulus. It provides the higher stiffness of the system.
