Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Wheel arch area in cars:

There are three types of standards maintaining around world. They are as mentioned below,

1)Jappan standard

2)European standard

3)US standard

It is derived as per different road conditions at specified regions.

Jappan standard:

The ARAI team derived this criteria.

We have to project the wheel center axis line in top view of wheel & fender assembly. Also line created with angle of 30degree at front & 50degree at back side of center axis line.Project all three lines in top view. Now the gap between wheel & fender body should be minimum 5mm in projected line path.

Wheel should be inside of the fender.

European standard:

Create the lines in side view of assembly Same method as per we did in Japan standard.Additionally create one more line to connect center point & point which is taken vertically 150mm distance away from horizontal center line.

Project all lines in top view. Now the distance between wheel & fender should be minimum 10mm.

US standard:

Create lines in side view for every 10degree from 100 degree to -100 degree.

Project those lines in top view.

Now the distance between wheel & fender should be minimum 5mm.

Study of wheel arch with European standard:

1)Point at 150mm vertical distance from horizontal center line.

Only 6mm gap is there.

2)Middle point between 50degree inclined line & 150mm vertical distance from horizontal center line.

There is only 2.8mm gap available between fender outer & wheel.

3)The gap at 50 Degree rearward line is 0.1mm

4)The gap at vertical line projection point is 10mm

5)The gap at 30 Degree forward line intersection point is 10mm.

S NO POINT GAP (mm)
1 SA 10
2 SB 10
3 SC 0.1
4 SD 3
5 SE 6

Based on this study given model is not meeting European standard.

It has to correct. At all points we must have minimum 10mm gap between fender outer to wheel outer face.
