FENDER

What is fender ?

  • The fenders are located over the wheels of the vehicle – two in the front right and left, and two in the rear right and left of your vehicle.
  • Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel arch. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

There are two types of fender:

  1. Full Bumper type
  2. Half bumper type

Full Bumper Type: This type of bumper is not being produced these days as it is a large component to manufacture and it is a single component with bumper so when it crashes we need to change the whole set which will be costlier.

Half Bumper Type: This is widely used now a days as it wastes less material and connects with different components of the vehicle and very easy to replace and manufacture because of less complexity.

We have been provided with a Class A surface of fender at which we need to design different mountigs for the fender and we have been also provided with master section of drip area.

Class A Surface:

Master Section for Drip Area:

Drip Area Mounting

  • The Mounting is attached to the engine component of the vehicle.
  • The embosses on the drip mounting should be flat w.r.t the curvature.
  • A bend is provided at the free end of the mounting to increase the stiffnesss of the mounting.

Bumper Mounting Area

  • It is mounted ont the chassis to hold the position.
  • As bomper are mounted over this area of the fender it is called bumper mounting area.

Baffle Mounting Area

  • It is mounted on the wheel arch area.
  • These mountings are created for fixing the baffle/splash mounting which will be a plastic unit.

Sill Mounting Area

  • This is located at the bottom of the fender. The mounting part is created such that it fits to sill.
  • We didnt provided any extra flange to the sill as few sill mounting designed with flange and few designed without flange as per the requirement.

A-Pillar Mounting Area

  • A-Pillar mounting is a vertical support on a vehicle whcih holds the windshield set up.
