Fender Design Challenge
FENDER DESIGN
Fender :-
The pressed and formed sheet-metal part mounted over the road wheels of an automobile, bicycle, etc. To reduce the splashing of mud, water, and the like. A device on the front of a locomotive, streetcar, or the like, for clearing the track of obstructions.
It is also the styling components which is exposed to customers from which cannot be welded. Its assembely is done by using retailer clip and fasteners. It use to protect the engine from foreign materials.
On the design of fender their are some fenders as follow:-
a) Full Bumper Type b) Half Bumper Type

Fender Mounting Points :-
- Drip Area
- Bumper Mountings
- Body Mounting area
- 'A'- Pillar Mountings
- Baffle Mounting Area
A baffle or plastic guard like part is joined to the fender in the wheel arch area. It help to reduce the vibrations and noise and mud flaps are mounted on the same area. We have to design the fender by considering the these parts and their clearences.
Design Considerations :-
- Embosses are provided to increase the strength.
- Embosses face should be flat upto 10mm so the fitting / mounting should be proper.
- The Fillet of 2mm-3mm is provided to avoid sharp edges.
- Corners flanges are provided to ease the productivity of the part.
- Darts are provided to the long surface / long extended the surface so that it help to reduce the vibration of surface.
- Uniform thickness is maintained.
Master Section of Drip Area :-

Drip Area :-
It is the area through which the fender is attached to engine housing through bolts. We have to design this by considering the ease of manufacturing operations and avoid the sudden change in diamension if corner relief provided if it need only then blends, embosses and fillets are use to increase the local strength.

Bumper Mounting Area :-
Bumper is installed on front and rear side of the vehicle. It's main function is to absorb the impact upon collision, minimizing the damage to main body and it is mounted on this area.

Body Mounting area :-

'A'- Pillar Mountings :-
In the case of cars, “pillars” refer to roof pillars, and they're lettered front to back. A-Pillars straddle the windshield.

Baffle Mounting Area :-
A mud guard made of plastic resin. Protects both your own vehicle and vehicles driving behind from mud splashed while driving and it is mounted on this area.

Conclusion :-
To keep the material waste the minimum unnecessary features are avoided. The edges are kept clean and straight forward wherever possible. Considering the weight and cost of production the design is kept simple and without compromising on the safety aspect of the part.
Thus the designing of the fender is completed using the NX CAD. By considering all the design parameters.
