Fender Design Challenge

                                                                                                    FENDER DESIGN REPORT

Aim:

To design the BIW(Body In White) of the front fender using the fender skin data master section as the given data by using NX CAD.

Fender:

Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile. The fender is a part of an automobile that covers the wheel to prevent sand, mudstone, rocks, liquids and other roadside material to be thrown into the air by rotating tyres. This helps to secure pedestrians from accidents and the engine compartments from damage.

Passenger vehicles are mostly provided with four fenders one on each tyre. For car bodies that are wide and cover the tyre. Fender forms the wheel well surrounding the tyres. The requirements changes from country to country based upon the road conditions.

Mounting Regions on fender:

There are 5 mounting regions on the fender. They are:

  • Drip Area
  • Sill Mount
  • Bumper Mount
  • A-Pillar Mount
  • Splash/Baffale Mount

Design of Drip mount Area:

The given master section for creating the drip area.

Skin Data:

It is an important mounting feature of the front fender. It's connected to the engine compartment.

Design Criteria:

  • Emboss is provided to increase the strength impact for the fender.
  • Smooth curves are designed by simple manufacturing of the panel.
  • Ribs are provided to the drip area mount to give structural support and extra strength.
  • Maintain an extra 10mm from the flat surface for the fastener holes.
  • All fillets should be maintained 2 or 3mm radius in most regions.
  • The thickness of the fender is 0.75mm.

Drip Mounting Area:

Sill Mount Area:

Bumper Mount Area:

A-Pillar Mount Area:

Baffle Mount Area:

Final Front Fender:

Conclusion:

Finally, the design of the fender is done with the help of NX CAD software by following the given master section.
