FENDER DESIGN

Design of car front fender's Sill mount, Bumper mount, A-pillar mount and drip region.

DEFINITION-

Fender is part of an automobile which covers the wheel well. It prevents the sand, mud, stones, liquid etc to be thrown into the air by rotating wheels. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. It is a styling part that is why OEM's manufacture fenders with in their facilities.

There are two type of front fenders full bumber type and half bumber type. For weight reduction which further cause cost efficiency now days we use half bumber type fender mainly across the globe.

As already mentioned these are styling parts so welding or reviting can't be applied. Thus fenders are joined with vehichle's different mounting parts using screws and fasteners. Because of this fenders are easily replacable.

These mounting regions are-

1.Body 2.sill 3.A-piller 4.cowl 5.Drip Area 6.Bumper

DESIGN OF FRONT FENDER USING NX-CAD-

1. Construct the outer surface of fender using skin file.

2. Provide bumper mounting.

  • Emboss the exteded surface and provide holes for the fasteners.
  • Using dart commant provide gusset to strengthen the mounting region.

3. Provide A-piller mounting.

  • Emboss the exteded surface and provide holes for the fasteners.
  • Trim off the extra sheet.

4. Provide the drip area.

GIVEN- Master section for Drip Area

  • Considering the above section prepare a drip area.
  • Give clearance of 150mm at front side from head lamp and less than 300mm at rear side from the A-piller.
  • Give required drafts for better drawability and will block the vision from ouside into the engine compartment.
  • Keep the height of the drip area less than 40mm to make it suitable form tooling operations and reduce the spring back effect.
  • Keep the length of drip area 10mm shorter from the nearest enigine component.

  • Extend the sheet with required draft and blends
  • Provide the holes on emosses for fasteners.
  • To strengthen the region provide ribs in middle and a bend at the end.

5.Provide Baffel mounting.

In order to increase the life of a fender againt the mud, stones, road fluids etc. fender have baffle around.

  • Provide holes for the baffle mounting on extended surface.

6. Provide sill mounting.

  • Emboss the exteded surface and provide holes for the fasteners at the bottom.
  • Trim off the extra sheet.
  • Blend the side edges after thicken to smoothen the ends.

7. Indicator Mounting.

  • Many vehicles have indicators on fender.
  • Proved an emboss and create mounting area for the side indicator.
