Fender Design Challenge
01) Objectives
To design car front wheel fender from given skin surface using CATIA V5.
02) Introduction
*) FENDER
Fender is a part of a vehicle which frames a wheel and prevents from entering sticky and hard substance such as mud, sand, rock, etc. into the air. Sticky materials such as mud may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects such as stones can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. Hence fender helps to prevent the matrial to throw into the air.
The following image shows the fenders which covering front & rear wheels
*) Types of fenders
- Full Bumper type
Full bumper type fenders which cover whole wheel are seen in most of the old model cars because currently all the cars are using half bumper type fenders to avoid scrap while manufacturing.

- Half Bumper type
Currently all the car models uses half bumper type fenders, the advantage of using half bumper type is, it reduces the cost of manufacturing al the tool size reduces & also reduces the overall weight of the vehicle, which ultimately increases vehicle performance.
*) Mounting areas of fender
The fender is assembled on vehicle by making contact at different areas also called mounting areas, they are
- Drip mounting area
- Bumper mounting area
- Sill mounting area
- Body mounting area
- A-Pillar / Cowl mounting area
The following image shows the different mounting areas of fender

03) Design Approach
a) Requirements
*) Skin Surface
*) Thickness :- 0.75mm as given
*) Master section for drip area mounting
*) Draft angle :- Min. 7 degrees
b) Procedure
*) Drip mounting area design
Design drip area by considering all the design rules following master given section.
*) Bumper mounting area
Create bumper mounting area by considering all the design rules & also create emboses for attachment.
*) Sill mounting area
Create sill monting area which connects the fender body & sill area of the vehicle.
*) A-Pillar / Cowl mounting area
*) Baffle mounting area
Create mounting areas which attaches the baffle covering & fender

05) Conclusion
Created fender from given skin surface & mounting areas using master section data. Also complete report about fender & its design approach using Catia V5 has been done.
