Fender Design Challenge

FENDER DESIGN

Objective:

To design the front fender with the following mounting areas in NX CAD by using the Fender styling surface, Design consideration and Master Section Inputs,

  • Drip Mounting Area
  • A Pillar Mounting Area
  • Bumper Mounting Area
  • Sill Mounting Area
  • Baffles

Fender:

Fender is one of the component of the automobile which it is placed in the front as well as in the rear of the car. The followings are the main purpose of the fender,

  • To prevent the mechanical parts which is inside the engine compartment from splashing of stones, muds etc.,
  • It ensures the pedestrains safety by prevents the splashing of stones, muds and other particles by the wheel spinning when driving the car.
  • It helps the performance of the car in the way of aerodynamics. Also It improves the aesthatic look of the car.

Types of Fender:

  1. Full Bumper Type Fender
  2. Half Bumper Type Fender

Full Bumper Typer Fender - Over the conventional period of time, Full Bumper Type Fenders are used in the classic cars. It requires more steel material to manufacturing and gives more scrap because of the larger shape.

Half Bumper Type Fender - Now a days, the automobile designs are keep evolving more to enhance the performance and functionalities. So that the half bumper type fender is comes in to minimize the weight of the material hence it can improves the performance of the car. The remaining areas can compensate by the plastic materials.

In addition to the design enhancement, In India, Tata motors has enhanced the design to the next level by introducing the splash guard in the rear fender in TATA Altroz i-Turbo. Like this minor design are also comes in indian automobile market to gives more functionality and safety to the pedestrains.

Fender Mounting Regions:

  1. Drip Mounting
  2. A Pillar Mounting
  3. Bumper Mounting
  4. Sill Mounting
  5. Body Mounting

Input Class A Surface:

Design Consideration:

  • According to the given master section input, the drip mount should be located at the distance of 200mm from the A-Pillar to gives the clearance for cowl and at the distance of 150mm from the bumper side to gives the clearance for headlight.
  • As per the drip datas which is mentioned in the master section input, the drip has to be designed.
  • Based on the fender design, the A-Pillar Mount, Bumper Mount, Sill Mount and Baffle Mount Holes has to be designed.
  • Embossed faces should be flat and holes in the emboss should makes with the additional clearance of 5mm to access to the fasteners using fastener tools.
  • To Strengthening the mounts, darts has to be added wherever required.

Drip Mounting Region:

Drip Mounting is one of the important mounting for the fender. It is placed at the region of engine compartment and the hood closing area, so that while designing the drip mounting in the fender, the distance from the cowl and distance from the headlight region should be followed as per the standard values to give the clearances. 200mm is the clearance for cowl and 150mm is the clearance for headlight side. The drip mounting are designed as per the input datas which is given the following image,

A-Pillar Mounting Region:

Based on the vehicle type and design, A-Pillar angle has varying and It used to holds the windsheild and gives the structural support to the roof. Front fender is connected to the A-Pillar by using the A-Pillar Mounts in the fender.

Bumper Mounting Region:

Structure which is made of plastic or metal is attached to the front and rear end of the car is bumper. These bumpers are attached to the fenders by using the bumper mountings in the fender.

Sill Mounting Region:

Fenders are attached to the body sill by using the sill mountings which is in the bottom of the fender.

Baffles Mounting Region:

Baffles are assembled to the fender by simply using this baffles mounting holes with the help of fasteners.

Different Orientations of Fender:

Conclusion:

By Considering the mentioned Design considerations and Master section inputs, Front side fender of the car has been designed with the mounting areas(Drip mounting, A-Pillar mounting, Sill mounting, Bumper mounting and Baffle mounting holes) by using the Siemens NX.
