Fender Design Challenge

Fender:

Fender is a front outer side member of a car which covers the wheel side. Fender purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other particles.

Types of Fender:

Full front fender:

If the fender covers the tire, the wheel well surrounding the tire, and it is not directly visible from above the car body. It increases the weight and scrap of the component.

It is not used now a days because they requires bigger size blank to produce the part and the large scrap is also produced.

Half front fender:

It reduces the weight and scrap. It creates only half of what the full front fender does and the other part is created with the bumper part.

Uses of car Fenders:

  • Car Fenders provides safety to the driver and the passengers at the time of accidents or collisions.
  • Car Fender limit the exposure of your car's body and engine to external elements that are harmful.
  • Car Fender enhance the overall look of your cars.

Aim of this Project:

The main aim is to design the fender model with the necessary mounts using the class-A surface.

Mounts:

  1. Drip Mount Area.
  2. A-Pillar Area.
  3. Sill Mount Area.
  4. Bumper Mount Area.
  5. Baffle Area.

Software Used:

NX Cad

Procedure:

  • Create the mount area layouts.
  • Cut the class A to create a space for the mountings.
  • Sew the surfaces.
  • Creat Emboss with flat face for mounting.
  • Creat mounting holes.
  • Provide relief at required areas.
  • Provide dart at required areas to strengthen the part.
  • Thicken the part to convert it to solid.

Final Model:

1. Drip Mount Area:

It is the area through which the Fender is attached to engine housing through fasteners. There shold be some consideration followed to design the drip area, from back side of the fender there should be 200mm clearence for cowl mounting area and from the front there should be 150mm clearence for the head lamp housing unit.

2. A-Pillar Area :

A Piller is on the cars either side of the front windshield which is the reason the windshield in the place.

3. Sill Mount Area :

The Sill Mounting area is in the bottom of the fender. It is mostely gets connected with the door region of the car.

4. Bumper Mounting Area :

The Bumper Mounting region must be rigid in order to withstand the force acting upon it during collision. So, the Mounting space can be larger.

In this Mounting, the Fender connects with the bumper.

5. Baffle Area :

Baffle is to be mounted here.

Conclusion :

Following the above procedure we can design a fender.
