Fender Design Challenge

                                                                                                                               Fender Design

Aim:

To Create the design of Front Fender with Drip area, Sill Mounting area, Bumper Mounting area, A Pillar Mounting area according to the Engineering Standards by using NX CAD.

Fender:

Fender is the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the underside). Its purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fender are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. It is often also called as Mudguard

Sticky materias, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embended in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire are high velocity as the tire impacts kinetic energy to the attached  objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles are pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

Types of fender:

1.Full Fender

It is not used now a days because they requires bigger size blank to produce the part and the large scrap is also produced.

2.Half Fendert

In the half Fender type the scrap quality is reduced and we can produce two parts at a same time by slightly increasing by the size of the blank. we can use plastic parts at front which reduces weight of the part.

Introduction:

In a typical passenger car to pedestrain collision, it is noted that  the pedestrian's body rotates after the initial contact with the hood leading edges. Consequently, the head often crashes into a stiff part of the car body, resulting in seriously or life threatening head injuries. Therefore reduce pedustrain factalities, It is improve vehicle structure so as to mitigate head injuries.

Front Fender are one example of such stiff body parts with small impact energy absorption capability

Uses of car Fenders:

Car Fender limit the exposure of your car's body and engine to external elements that are harmful.

Fender flares are attached to ensure that both the body and engine have minimal contact with corrosive elements

Car Fenders provides safety to the driver and the passengers at the time of accidents or collisions. They are manufactured in a way to provide bend during front and side collisions.

Car Fenders are designed to avoid wind resistance and make your car more aerodynamic.

Car Fender enhance the overall look of your cars. Fender flares are available in distinctive designs in the market. Mostly you find universal Fender flares, but you can get customized cars Fenders to fit your car wheels.

Input from Styling Team

1.Drip area:

It is the area through which the Fender is attached to engine housing through fasteners. There shold be some consideration followed to design the drip area, from back side of the fender there should be 200mm clearence for cowl mounting area and from the front there should be 150mm clearence for the head lamp housing unit.

Considering the above design constrains we have to design the drip area. Embosses are provided to increase strength, corners of the flanges are smoothen to ease of the production. Uniform wall thickness of 0.75mm.

2.Sill Mounting area:

The Sill Mounting area is in the bottom of the fender.

It is mostely gets connected with the door region of the car.

Here, proper embossing and holes for the fasteners are provided.

The ribs are provided to improve the strength.

3.Bumper Mounting area:

In this Mounting, the Fender connects with the bumper.

The Bumper Mounting region must be rigid in order to withstand the force acting upon it during collision. So, the Mounting space can be larger.

4.A Pillar Mounting area:

A Piller is on the cars either side of the front windshield which is the reason the windshield in the place.

It is Mounted on the A Pillar by means of fasteners and these are covered by outer side view mirrors.

Here, the proper embossing are provided along with holes for fasteners.

Splash Cover or Wheel well Mounting region:

At this points the splash covers are mounted to avoid the dirt and chipping materials entering into the engine area, it is also protects the pedestrains from the rocks and sands picked by the tyres in motion.

Final Design:

Taking the inputs from the drip area mounting, here the design is started, bumper and splash mountings information are taken from the Fender Design.

Commands Used

          1. Curve on surface.

          2. Trim Sheet.

          3. Law Extension.

          4. Face Blend.

          5. Bridge Curve.

          6. Emboss.

          7. Edge Blend.

          8. Extend Sheet.

          9. Dart.

          10.Project curve on surface.

Conclusion:

Fender Design is completed by using the NX software with satisfying all design constrains and strengthning the design as required.
