Fender Design Challenge
REPORT ON FENDER DESIGN
AIM- To Design the Fender mounting points on the given model and with the mastersection for Drip area by considering the factors like safety and sheet metal manufacturing feasibilty for possible mounting regions.

FENDER
Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Sticky materials, such as mud, may adhere to the smooth outer tire surface, while smooth loose objects, such as stones, can become temporarily embedded in the tread grooves as the tire rolls over the ground. These materials can be ejected from the surface of the tire at high velocity as the tire imparts kinetic energy to the attached objects. For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.
In British English, the fender is called the wing (this may refer to either the front or rear fenders. However, in modern unibody vehicles, rear fenders may also be called quater panel.) The equivalent component of a bicycle or motorcycle, or the "cycle wing" style of wing fitted to vintage cars, or over tires on lorries which is not integral with the bodywork, is called a mudguard in Britain, as it guards other road users – and in the case of a bicycle or motorcycle, the rider as well – from mud, and spray, thrown up by the wheels.
Fender Cover for protection while Servicing
Need of Car Fender
- Fender is a sheet of metal covering for wheel of your car.
- Fender is designed to provide resistance against wind and other roadside debris to enter Engine Compartment.
- Fender has a plastic part called Baffle or fender Liner which fits underside the fender to protect the metal from corrosion by stopping the flow of mud and water inside from different road conditions.
Types of Fenders
- Full bumper type
- Half bumper type
Full Bumper type
Full bumper fender is not generally used nowadays because they require bigger size of blank to produce the part and waste material is also there while manufacturing.

Half Bumper type
Half bumper fender is used because the waste of material is less & can produce two fender at the same time by slightly increase the raw sheet. and to reduce the weight & cost mostly bumper fender are been produced.

MASTERSECTION

The Data given in Mastersection is-
- The drip area should be made after leaving the space of 150mm from front for headlight mounting and before 200mm from cowl area.
- There should be more than 10mm distance left from engine room to the mounting flange.
- The angle from top is specifically of flange 40 Degrees and 8 mm long is created to stop the view of engine compartment or fasteners from outside.
*The emboss should not possess any minimum radius of curvature and it should be Flat For mounting*
Mountings of Fender
To assemble the Fender, mounting places were considered.
- Drip mounting area
- Sill mounting area
- Bumper mounting area
- A - Pillar mounting area
- Splash/Baffle/Fender Liner mounting area
- Drip mount area
Primarily, the fundamental design of a fender incorporates developing the drip area as it is a huge mounting region and requires certain characteristics that should qualify a fender design. The drip area would be recognizable from the opening between the hood and the fender.

- Sill mount area
The rocker panel, or sill, is the part of the car traditionally running between the wheel-arches beneath the doors.

- Bumper mount area
It is called bumper mount area because bumpers are mounted over the fender mounting available at the front of the fender. The bumper mount area of fender, mounts on the chassis to hold the position.

- A-Pillar mount area
A-Pillars are vertical support on a vehicle, A-pillar holds the windshield set up and just downside to the A-pillar fender is mounted to hold the position.

- Splash/Baffle/Fender Liner mounting area
To stop all the debris going into the engine room and various sections like suspension joints and so on, a plastic unit called Splash/Baffle/Fender Liner mounting is placed. The Mounting points are created for fixing the Baffle/Fender Liner mounting Specially.
